Racing Notes

Great Figures: The totalisator turnover of £52,298 10s at Pukekohe last Saturday was a record for the Franklin Racing Club, the largest pool being invested on the Franklin Cup, £8379. This financial result was particularly good ' seeing that three of the eight winners were outsiders. — Lady Montana: It was reported that Lady Montana had slightly injured herself on the trip from Te Aroha to Pukekohe, and it was deemed unwise to run her. Although the Opaki galloper failed to win on her northern trip her form was good enough to suggest possibilities in the very near future. Suleiman: Very few Auckland horses will be seen out'at Trentham next week. Suleiman has been entered for the Thompson Handicap and open sprint, and also in the latter event is the three-year-old filly Valimeen, who has yet to win this season. Suleiman is expected to take on the big mile at Trentham and after that fixture will be kept for the Auckland Easter Handicap.

Galilee Stays On: Galilee scored an end-to-end victory in the Franklin Cup, in which her win divedend was well on the way to a score. She hung out rather badly making the home turn and then finished wide out, so her effort in stalling off Glen Abb was full of merit. She confirmed the impression gained at Te Aroha that she will stay out a middle distance.

Electric Spear: Electric Spear shows every promise of making a name for himself as a juniper, for in only three starts over hurdles’ to date he has run a second and two firsts. He was impressive at Te Aroha and again at Pukekohe. He and Airam took the final obstacle together on Saturday and the latter immediately weakened, but this did not deter Electric Spear’s rider from pushing his mount right out to win by several lengths. Defy:

Defy is the name that has been claimed for the three-year-old halfsister by Defoe to Boughal in E. Burgess’s Trcntham stable. The filly who is owned by Mr A. J. Taggart, of Petone, has been entered for one of the hack sprints at next week’s Wellington meeting.

Pleasing Win: Rabble’s win at Motukarara on Saturday would have been pleasing to his owner, Mr E. W. Spencer, who recently returned from a trip to England in improved health. Etzel:

Etzel, who was purchased in Hawke’s Bay last month by Mr O. Disley, of Wellington, is a four-year-old brown gelding by Siegfried from the Gainscourt mare Alimony, hence he is a full blood relative to Remittance a winner in Australia, and a threequarter blood relative to Mother-in-Law. Clessamor: Clessamor has been purchased by Mr A. Lile, of New Plymouth, and he will probably be put to jumping. Mr Lile formerly owned Omeo, Illuminate, Tigerism, and Royal Bengal. Wotan Retired: Wotan ran his last race in the Wanganui Cup. It had been obvious for a long time that he had gone sour, and his owners have now decided to retire him to the stud. Records: Two new world’s records were made in America last year, Galley Slave running three furlongs in 32 4-ssec at Santa Anita, and Porter’s Mite six and a half furlongs in Imir

14 2-ssec at Belmont Park (New York). Both were two-year-olds. Carterton Riders: The following riding engagements have been made for the Carterton meeting to-day:—G. R. Tattersall, Siegmund, Yours Truly, Dissipation, Phil; R. L. Kitchen, Good Sun; F. N. Power, Mister Quex, Ugly Duckling; W. Doyle, Titter, Drachma, Trebor; J. Forsyth, Liane; J. McCauley, Bisect, Mother-in-law; P. Burgess, Lustra!; A. Jenkins, Barabbas; R. A. Hawkings, White Lady. Leading Riders By riding three winners at the Rangitikei Racing Club’s meeting last Saturday, W. Broughton further increased his lead in the jockeys’ premiership, and his record is now 44 wins. With 39 wins, H. Wiggins still holds second place, and is closely followed by B. H. Morris and G. R. Tattersall, who both had successes at New Plymouth yesterday. The following is the list of the leading jockeys for the season:— W. J. Broughton 44 H. N. Wiggins 39 .B. H. Morris 37 G. R. Tattersall 37 R. W. McTavish 25 L, H. Clifford 25 G. Humphries (retired) 23 C. T. Wilson 22 O. Evans 22 P. Burgess 20 J. Chaplin 20 H. Callahan 19 A. Messervy 19 P. Atkins 18 L. Cullen 18 A, Jenkins 18
