Quality Stock: Reports from Australia credit the first foals of Van Derby with being of exceptional quality, and confidence is expressed in the Globe Derby horse proving a fine sire. First Start:

Josedale Grattan, who figures 1 among the acceptors for the maiden ' event at Thames, is a three-year-old ■ American pacer, and it will be her , • first start in the Dominion. Nell Volo: Nell Volo Is shaping satisfactorily in her work at Takanini, and a good deal of interest is being taken in her displays. She was mated with Clover|dale earlier in the season, and hopes are held out that she will prove in ' foal to the Abbedale horse. Speedy: Violet Wrack was a costly failure at Hutt Park, but the track was her downfall, and the first time she strikes anything like easy going she should make amends. There are not many trotters with more speed than this mare, but she is apt to leave her feet. Axminster: Axminster has been off the scene since registering an easy win at Cam- [ bridge earlier in the season owing to a leg injury, but the ailment is responding to treatment, and it should not be long before he is again seen in action. Making Headway: Recent racing has suggested that Mackscot is making headway with judicious racing, and it may be found that he will yet live up to his aristocratic American breeding. Donald Dhu: Donald Dhu failed to run up to expectations at Canterbury Park last month, but he is likely to attract his full share of support in the Timaru Trotting Cup. Will Be Warm: Highland Scott is to make his next appearance in the Nursery Stakes at \ Timaru and he is likely to be a warm favourite. Great Don: Great Don’s showings at Hutt Park were a happy augury for the future, and he should not be long in making a return to the winning list.
