[Our Own Correspondent! At the Borough Council’s ordinary meeting, there were present Crs J. Murphy (Deputy-Mayor), Wise, McLean, Little, Lawrence. Mr J. O’Brien, M.P., forwarded letters from Messrs Semple and Armstrong regarding carrying out the water supply scheme, the former regretting there was no vote under his control whereby funds could be ob-, tained to assist with the work. The matter had been investigated last year and the conclusion arrived at was that it was doubtful whether such a large expenditure on a water supply was wise, on account of the low valuation of the Borough, with the population declining. Mr Armstrong said he had given the matter further consideration amfwas ivw prepared to offer a subsidy on the basis of 45s a week for married men and 30s a week for single men, for the employment of registered unemployed men on the work. The Deputy-Mayor said the replies werej not encouraging. The population was not declining. There were eight sawI mills operating in the district, and it would not be long before the new gold 1 dredge was working on the Tarama--1 kau River. —It was resolved to ask fcr further consideration. 1 The Commissioner of Transport! wrote that the New Zealand Road Safety Council would sit early in March to consider whether or not it is in the interests of road safety to impose restrictions on the use of motor cycles. The District Land Registrar wrote re sections in the name of David Kelly, stating that a certificate of title had been issued in June, 1885 t and no dealing had been registered since that date. —lt was resolved that the Town Clerk write Mr Kelly, Greymouth, pointing out the position. It was resolved, on the motion of Cr. McLean, seconded by Cr. Little, that anyone wanting the services of any of the men working on the No. 13 Scheme should’ consult the Chairman of Public Works. Accounts amounting to £237 14s 7d were passed for payment. The usual monthly meeting of the ( School Committee was held on Mon-, day evening.- Present: Messrs D. A. ■ McLean (chairman), R. Burridge, Ivan; ' Popich, and T. McGill. The combined R.S.A. picnic will be held at Lake Mahinapua on Saturday, March 4. At a special meeting of the Kumara Branch to make the transport arrangements, it was decided to extend a cordial invitation to citizens of Kumara and district to join in the outing. In order to facilitate the transport, intending patrons are requested to leave their names with Messrs F. Wise or H. Hamer before the general meeting on Thursday I evening. . Mrs G. Gallop and daughter, of Wanganui, are visiting relatives in Kumara and Dillmanstown.
