COURT NEWS

CHRISTCHURCH, December 3. Arrested at nine o’clock this morning on a charge of breaking into a house at Halswell during the night and committing theft, Reginald Morgan Aldridge appeared before Mr F. F. Reid in the Magistrate’s Court. He was remanded to appear on December 8, bail being allowed in his own recognisance of £5O, and one surety of £5O.

Charged that on July 16, at Dunecun, he unlawfully converted to his own use a motor-cycle owned by Stuart Charles Watson, and valued at £3O, Vernon Arnold Watson appeared before Mr F. F. Reid, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court this morning. He was remanded to appear on December 8, bail of £l5O being allowed, on the condition that Watson reported daily to the police. “This was more of a boyish escapade than anything else, but it is serious, nevertheless,” said Sergeant J. J. Kearns in the Children’s Court this morning, when two small boys were charged with breaking and entering and theft. Both boys admitted the offence and Sergeant Kearns said that they had taken battens from the warehouse window and had then broken in. They had taken som£ empty liquor bottles only. After a warning both, boys were admonished and discharged by Mr F. F. Reid, S.M. Associated with him was Mrs T. Green, J.P. A third small boy admitted stealing goods and money valued at 7s Old, at the Tepid Baths. Detective D. McKenzie said that the offence was a difficult one to detect and hard to sheet home. The boy was ordered to make restitution and" he was placed under the care of the Child Welfare Officer for twelve months. Two youths who each admitted stealing a bicycle lamp were each fined ss.

A young girl was committed to the care of the Child Welfare Department after evidence had been given, showing that she was not under proper control.
