WESTPORT NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent] Shipping: WESTPORT, December 2. The Wingatui has been delayed and now leaves Wellington to-day with general cargo, loading coal for return to Wellington. The Kaitoa is due to-morrow to load coal for Nelson on Monday. The Te Aroha sailed for'Little Wan-, ganui this morning, thence on to Wellington. The James Cook is in port loading coal for Noumea, and is to be despatched at 6 p.m. to-day if the weather conditions permit completing the loading.

[Personal: ’ Mr E. Heaphy, of the P. and T. Department, Wellington, and a memoer of the well-known Greymouth family, was a visitor to Westport yesterday. Mr Heaphy was a' prominent New Zealand representative hockey player. Mr W. Farr, of the P. and T. Department, Oamaru, is spending annual leave with his parents, Mr and Mrs W. Farr, Peel Street, Westport. Mr A. B. Swap, of the General Post Office relieving staff, is acting Chief Postmaster, Westport, in place of Mr E. S. Ollerenshaw, who is on holiday leave. Mrs A. C. Johnston, who has been Post Mistress at Mokihinui Mine for the past 35 years, has now retired from the service, and the office has been closed. In ’acknowledgement of her good work, the P. and T. Department sent Mrs Johnston a letter of appreciation, and a cheque for £5 ss. I

Ministerial: The Hon. P. C. Webb continued his tour yesterday, when his party visited Seddonville. During the afternoon the Minister received deputations on matters relating to the progress of the district. Mr Webb and his party were the guests of the Seddonville Branch of the N.Z. Labour Party at a dinner in the Seddonville Hall. Mr B. Dahren presided, and he was assisted by the Secretary of the Branch, Mr A. Steele. During the evening, Mr Webb addressed a meeting in the public hall, where he was welcomed by Mr Dahren, President |of the local Branch of the Labour Party, who referred to the splendid work done by Mr Webb during his term of office, and congratulated him on his large majority, and expressed the utmost faith in the Government’s policy. Mr Webb was greeted with applause when he rose to speak, and firstly thanked the electors for their confidence in his Party and himself, and he assured them that the Labour Government was determined to raise the standard of living, and then proceeded to deliver an address explaining different aspects of the policy, and the work that has been carried out by the Government and appealed . to those present to assist the Government in their great .work. Mr Webb concluded by thanking those present, and later, many questions were asked by members of the audience, and which were satisfactorily answered by the Minister. At the conclusion, a motion of thanks was passed, and cheers were given for Mr Webb and the Labour Government. Mr Webb visited Waimangaroa on the way to Seddonville, and received a number of deputations on the matter of river erosion, and the lighting of the village. A stop was made at the 14-mile, where an inspection was made of the damage being caused by the silting up of the river. Buller Tennis Association:

■The annual meeting of the above Centre was held at Granity last evening. Present: Messrs F. Hill, E. Tonks (St. John’s), J. G. Martin (Westport), F. Leonard (Granity), Peacock, C. Lester (Seddonville). Apology was received from Mr C. F. Schadick for non attendance. Mr Martin presided. It was decided that the Buller SubAssociation apply to the N.Z. Lawn Tennis Association to be registered as a major Association. The annual report and balance-sheet was read and adopted; the latter showing a credit of £26 8s 4d. The election of officers resulted as follows: —Patron, Hon. P. C. Webb (re-elected); President, Mr C. F. Schadick (re-elected); Secretary-Treasur-er, Mr R. Nottle (re-elected); VicePresidents, Messrs Leonard, Peacock and Watson; Auditor, Mr H. Lockey. It was decided that the secretary call nominations for the Ces. Walker Cup, the same to be in by the 14th December, and the next meeting of the Centre to be held at Granity on the 15th, the first round to be played the first week-end in January.

It was decided to draw for either Saturday and Sunday, which ever was suitable to the Clubs concerned. The Association’s ladder to be drawn up, and to consist of 12 men and 12 ladies.

It was also decided that Greymouth, Hokitika and Reefton be written to, asking them for tentative dates for representative fixtures.

Veledictory: Members of the White Star Football Club, met at the Elite Tea Rooms last evening, to farewell Messrs J. Smart and J. Small, members of the Club who have been transferred to Christcnurcn.

Mr Joseph Brown, President of the White Star Club presided, and carried out his duties successfully. A lengthy toast list was honoured. Following, the Royal toast, Mr C. M. Robertson proposed “White Star Football Club” and spoke at length of the creditable record of the Club and the fine spirit which prevailed among its members, and the good feeling that existed between the clubs. He sympathised with them in the loss of two such fine members as Jim Smart and Johnny Small, whose places would be hard to fill. Messrs J. Brown (President), and J. Lake (Secretary), and J. Connell (Club Captain); replied. "Kindred Clubs” was proposed by Mr T. Scanlon and replied to by Mr S. Stewart (Gid Boys’) and R. Butterfield '(Westport). “Kindred Sports” proposed by Mr R. Neill, and replied to by Mr W. Ryan (League), T. Connell (-Fishing), E. O’Connor (Cricket), T. Douglas (Rugby), S. Fisher (45’s), W. Phibbs (Boxing), and J. McCormack (Rowing)/ To the President, Mr Joe Brown, was entrusted the most important toast of the evening, that of the departing members. He eulogised Messrs Smart and Small for the fine example they had shown other members in going wholeheartedly into the sport, and giving it the very best that was in them. Both had been active arid 1 keen members and their departure

would mean a severe loss to the Club. However, all joined in congratulating them on their promotion and in wish-,, ing them all best wishes for thefu-l ture. In concluding, Mr Brown handed to both guests substantial tokens of esteem. Messrs T. Scanlon (Social Secretary), J. Connelly (Club Captain), J. Brown, T. Douglas, R. Pryde, l J. Feehan (Old Boys’), R. Butterfield (Westport railwaymeh), and J. Tracey, all joined in a course of eulogies of Messrs Smart and Small, and echoed the best wishes extended to them by the President, the - recipients' briefly and warmly returned their sincere thanks. Honouring other appropriate toasts concluded' a very successful gathering.

Children’s Ball: The Theatre Royal presented a bright appearance last evening on the occasion of the Westport Primary Schools’ annual ball. The- floor was fully ‘occupied by children from the infants to the sixth standard, all gaily dressed in a variety of fancy, costumed. A crowded gallery watched the different movements of the dances, with absorbed interest. Farmers in the Dell, Lazy Mary, Lubin Too, Shoemaker Dance, Round and Roun,d the Valley, Brighton Cartip, Sally Waters, Drummer Boy, Grand March, Grand Old Duke of York, Swaying Dance, I See Ybu, Sweet Little Lila, See The Little Hands, were the dances presented by the primers and Standard fine; while for the other Standards, the pro- | gramme cortiprised: Skating Dance, If | All The World Were Paper, Maxina, Grand March, Polka, Double Courtesy, Godesses, Ace of Diamonds, Sellengers* Round, Ballet Tapping Dance, Gathering Peapods, One Step, Rufty Tufty, Skating Dance, Crested Hen, Boston Two Step and others. Special features were a ballet by a group of six girls, and a tap dance by Miss Joyce Pomeroy.

A lavish supper was treated appreciatively. Mr F. N. R. Downard, Headmaster, took occasion to thank the public for attending in such , large numbers, and giving such excellent support to the school. He also thanked the teachers, the School Committee, and wives, the judges (Mrs Bird and Miss Harkness), Mrs Gardiner, and all other helpers. Miss Doyle received much praise for the good work of herself and members of the infant staff. Mr W. D. Lutton acted as M.C. Other members of the staff all gave of their best towards making the call such an outstanding success. The judges announced the prize list as follows: —Primer I.: Penguin, Xmas Cracker ’(Kenwyn Huntef). Primer IL: Cowboy (Jimmy Phillips); Green and Silver Girl (Elva Peterson). Primer III.: Bathing Girl (Heather Bennie); Bridegroom (Gebrge Spencer). Primer IV.: Gipsy (Kathleen Rowlands); Golliwog (John Hampton). Standard I.: Indian Boy (Rex Skilton); Hawaiian Girl (Irene Junge). Standard IL: Father Christmas (Errol Neill); ' Persil. (Frances Martin). Standard III.: Russian Girl (Dawn Lilley); Dutch Boy (lan Nottle; Standard IV.: Red . and White Girl (Phyllis Intermann); Garden Girl (Margaret Downard); Standards V. and VI.: Absent Minded Beggar (Robert Lineham); Rosalind (Betty Benjamin); Minnie and Mickey Mouse (Joyce Pomeroy and Marcia Roselli.
