OVER PRODUCTION
Canada’s Wheat Problem
QUARTER MILLION FARMERS MAY NEED DOLE.
OTTAWA, November 29.
Before the Royal Commission investigating the Dominion and Provincial relations, the Manitoba Premier Mr John Bracken, demanded a definite national policy regarding the increasingly grave world wheat situation. He asked how Canada could continue to find markets for two-thirds of her wheat, in face of the steadily shrinking world markets. If she had known of this situation thirty years ago, she would not have developed half her present wheat acreage. If the present situation were not remedied, a quarter of a million farmers may cease growing wheat, and seek the dole. If the world would not take wheat being grown, Canada should seek a planned arrangement with Australia, Argentine and the United States for limited production. It was foolish to go on fighting each other for what market j was left.
