QUEEN CARNIVAL

■ GRAND OPENING TO-NIGHT. ; The greatest keenness prevails among the supporters of the four, . queens now that all is in readiness for the grand opening of the Marist Queen ’ Carnival, by His Worship the Mayor, 1 Mr F. A. Kitchingham, in the Town Hall, this evening, at 8 o’clock. The highest praise is due to those ' responsible for the lavish decoration of the hall, and the various stalls. Neither pains nor expense has been spared in order to create the real car-; nival atmosphere, and patrons will; feel themselves in a veritable fairy land of wonder and delight when they ( enter the carnival precincts this evening. An equal space has been allotted each queen for the display of goods. | Miss Quita Hassall (Confraternity Queen), has the stall on the left of I the main entrance and this is tastefully arrayed in red and green. Next on the same side is Miss Colleen Moore’s (the Sports Queen’s) stall decorated in green and gold, and brightened with a glittering, array of minia-; ture electric lights. On the opposite side of the stall is the Cobden Queen’s] (Miss Carmel Jeffries’) stall, and this!

presents a most pleasing appearance, with a tasteful blending of red and white. On the right of the main en-[ trance is the Convent' Queen’s stall, represented by Miss Molly Coll, and there the colour scheme is blue and white. All stalls will be loaded to plimsoll; mark. The stall-holders wish to stress the great variety Of their displays. Besides beautiful works of art, there will be bountiful supplies of fresh vegetables, cakes, sweets, and in fact, bargains to suit the taste of all. At eight o’clock, His Worship the Mayor will formally open the Carnival, and Mr James.O’Brien, M.P., will also speak. The Marist School Choir will render! several choruses and the evening’s -fun, will Be interspersed with items by pupils from Miss Dorothy Thwaites’ | School of Dancing.

SATURDAY’S SPORTS. With the approach of Saturday, interest in the big sports gathering at Victoria Park increases. The remark-' able progress of amateur athletics is reflected in the large number of entries received for all the amateur, events. The cycling events have filled well, and keen racing should result. Every provision has been made for ladies’ and schoolboys’ events, while' the will be provided for by J a working miniature railway, which will make trips during the day. Sideshows of every description will be on the grounds, in addition to a specially-arranged tea-room and sweet
