Dalgleish Shield RETAINED BY WESTPORT. Over the week-end Greymouth Golf Club teams visited Westport in quest of the Dalgleish Shield, but were defeated by Westport by a fair margin. The games, played on the Westport Club’s links, provided keen competition. The weather was fair, some showers being experienced, but the quick-drying nature of the links made underfoot conditions quite pleasant. The results were:— Westport A: Hay-MacKenzie 78, Schadick 80, Lovell 82, Lockey 84. Westport C: Frances 76, Martin 94, Fountain 79, Caldwell 79. Greymoulh A: P. Warnes 81, T. Casey' 83, B. Caulton 85, M. Smith 84. Westport B: Phipps 85, Walker 96, Wilson SO, Nottle 81. Greymouth B: Dr. H. S. Ray 89, W. Meldrum 89, R. A. McSorily 90, J. E. A. McKeefry 90. Greymouth C: C. Plimmer 85, A. Provan 90, F. F. Boustridge 90, F. O’Halloran 97. MEN’S MEDAL MATCH.

The following cards were returned by Senior and Intermediate players in a Medal Match held at Kaiata links on Saturday afternoon. Rain fell throughout the afternoon and conditions were heavy as a consequence:—

Crawley, who was beaten in the quarter-final of the British amateur golf championship by Hector Thomson at the twentieth, hotly complains that the Troon galery six times applauded his bad shots. “I never want to play here again,” he said. The gallerv of five thousand also did a lot of shouting during the Thomson Yates semi-final. The final will be contested by Ewing and Yates. QUARTER-FINALS. Ross Somerville (Canada) beat H. W. Hatterslev (Australia), 2 up. C. Yates (United States) beat C. J. H. Tolley (England), 3 and 2. R. C. Ewing (Ireland) beat J. B. iStevenson (Scotland), 1 up. Hector Thomson (Scotland) beat L. G. Grawley (England), at the twentieth. SEMI-FINALS. Ewing beat Somerville, 2 up. Yates beat Thomson at the nineteenth. In the quarter-final game between Somerville and Hattersley, the latter was out in 35, and Somerville in 36 but on the return Somerville squared at the sixteenth as a result of sinking a five-yard putt. Hattersley was 1 down when the pair reached the eighteenth. Here Ilattersley was bunkered on the edge of the green with his second. Somerville took the hole and the match. Somerville, who eliminated Hattersley, is the Canadian amateur champion, a title which he has heldi six times. In 1932 he achieved Ihe| distinction of winning the United States amateur championship. Crawley, whose ire was roused by the gallery, is a versatile athlete. H e won the English close amateur championship in 1931, and he has represented Cambridge at cricket, racquets,

and golf, and in 1932 played for Gentlemen against Players at Lord's, Ewing, one of the finalists, was a semi-finalist in the championship in 1936, and in that year was a member of the British Walker Cup team. His opponent Yates, is a former American inter-collegiate champion aYid one of the most promising of the American Walker Cup team. Ewing has been nominated for the remaining place in the British Walker Cup team. YATES WINS FINAL. (Received May 29, 6.30 p.m.) LONDON, May 28.
