Tne* local mine continues to work full time.
Mr W. Clarke (president) was the Miners’ Union delegate to the Buller Trades Council meeting held in Westport on Saturday. Mr G. Orman, who represented South Island in the Inter-island representative game at Auckland, arrived on the Hill on Tuesday night. Mr Orman has been selected to represent the New Zealand team to tour Australia, and left on Thursday morning for Christchurch.
Mr H. Stanley, who is a patient in the Buller Hospital, is progressing satisfactorily. Mrs H. Stanley is spending a short holiday in Westport. Miss R. McKinlay, of Westport, is spending a holiday on the Hill.
Members of the Millerton Women’s Institute were the guests of the S'tockton Women’s Institute last week. At Millerton Miners' Union meeting in Peggie’s Hall on May 18, Mr W. Clarke presided. A circular was received from Mr H. L. Evans, Miners' Central Committee secretary, stating that a meeting of the district delegates would be held a day prior to meeting the coal owners’ representatives on May 25, so that they coul.l discuss remits from the unions before discussing with the owners the district agreement. Quite a number of important remits were passed by the Inion for their delegate, Mr W. Clarke, 'to bring forward. A circular was received from Mr A. McLagan, (United Mine Workers’ secretary) acknowledging the local miners’ acceptance of the national delegates’ recommendation of. the new agreement, also stating the basis of the holidays provided in the new agreement. The Union secretary gave a half-yearly financial statement, which was received as satisfactory. A letter of thanks was received from Mr D. Wilson, National Secretary of the N.Z. Labour Party, for the fourth payment made ■to the Campaign Fund. The granting of support to the Spanish Aid Fund was brought up by the secretary, and supported by the president, and, after a little discussion, it was decided that the surplus left over from the Labour Party Campaign Fund, amounting to over £3, be forwarded, and that is fortnightly be collected by the secretary.
Millerton Medical Association held a special meeting in Peggie’s Hall on May 24. Mr R. Jack, who presided, stated that the auditors appointed to again go through the balance sheet had done so, and had brought forward a statement, which would be read by 'the secretary. The statement was read, and after a lengthy discussion, the committee’s recommendation was accepted, that, in six months’ time a financial statement shall again be made. The chairman announced that any persons requiring the services of Dr. Simpson could get in touch with the secretary or himself, and they would go down to the residence and ring up.
Thistle Soccer football team played Bachelors, of Denniston, on Millerton last Sunday, and won by 6 goals to nil.
Rival Rugby League team, from Westport, played the local side on the Millerton Domain on Sunday. The weather was fine, and a great number of spectacular passing movements were brought off by both sides. Millerton won by 22 points to 7.
