FARMERS’ REQUEST
. STATE TO PAY FREIGHT On Show Exhibits [Per Press Association.! INVERCARGILL, May 27. A remit suggesting that the Royal Show be held -at Woffington during the celebration of New Zealand Centenary was adopted for submission to the Royal Agricultural Society by the Southern District Council of the Societv to-day. It was stated that it had been suggested, that the show be held at Trentham Racecourse, if no other site is avail-1 able. | An application will be made by the, Ciuncil for the 1939 Royal Show to be held at Invercargill in the second week of December. The secretary | Mr A. E. Cameron, said that the last conference of the Society had agreed that, if it was not possible to pay freight on the stock sent from one island to the other, a representable show could not be expected. If the, 1939 Royal Show was held in Invercargill, there would be few exhibits from , the North Island, unless the breeders were given some encourage- j ment by the payment of the freight on the exhibits. The Government had made a grant of £5OO for the firs Royal Show, and had increased it to £lOOO for several years. It then JT’i duced it gradually in 1930 and 1931,1 and it had given nothing for the next five years. Last vear £250 had been cranteU. An application had been made to the Meat Board for a grant of £5OO. No reply had yet been received to these applications. The chairman Mr J. Preston (o Waikouaiti) said that the cost o freight on the exhibits was \ ei^1 'heavy, and the breeders required some assistance. A Waikato breeder would be at a great in exhibiting at Invercargill Royal Show because of the heavy 1 £ costs. It was decided that the delegates to the annual conference of th Socitv in Wellington should ask foi the freight to be paid on the exhibits by the State.
