DROWNED IN AVON

Three-Year-Old Child [Per Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, May 27. A three-year-old boy, George Ivan Ray, the only son of Mr and Mrs G. L., Ray, 28 Kotara Street, Riccarton, was drowned in the Avon River this afternoon. The child was last seen at 3.10, playing at the backdoor of his home, which is about 40 yards from the river.

When he was found to be missing, a search was made, and his body was found by his grandfather, Mr J. D. Mathieson, who was visiting the house at 3.30 on the mudbank in the river, about six chains from the house. A doctor was called, but the child was dead. It appears that the child got into the river, by crawling under a wire-netting fence at the back of the house.
