REEFTON NOTES
[Our Own Correspondent.] REEFTON, May 26. The Queen Carnival, which has been conducted by the Motueka Labour Party, throughout the electorate, drew to a highly successful close on Saturday night last, when Miss Melva McHenry, representing the Inangahua County, was chosen Queen by a substantial majority. This news was gladly welcomed by the various local Committees, who have worked so arduously and so willingly in responding to the call made upon them by the L.R.C. to raise funds for the election campaign. The Committee would like to take this opportunity of thanking all those people in the district who contributed so generously to the appeal. The Crowning Ceremony will take place in the Institute Hall’ Motueka, at 7 p.m. on Saturday next, 28th. inst, and will be performed in the unavoidable absence of the Prime Minister, by another Minister of the Crown.
Mrs. Jones and daughter, who have been in Reefton on a visit to the first named’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. J Magee, left this morning on return to Victoria, and were accompanied as far as Christchurch by her sister, Mrs F. Collis, and her mother, Mrs. Magee. Sen.
The Hospital Board passed accounts as follows at its meeting yesterday:— Receipts, £254 ss; Expenditure: Pecuniary assistance, £l3 15s: salaries, £2lO 0s 6d; Electric Light Coy. £9 12s lid, N.Z. Inangahua County Council at its ordinary meeting resolved that the chairman’s honorarium be fixed at £lOO. Cr. O’Regan moved and Cr. Clayton seconded that the sympathy of the Council be extended to the relatives of the late Mr Wm. Wilson, of Hokitika.—The motion was carried by members standing in silence. Cr Clayton was appointed the Council’s representative on the District Highways Council. Cr. Clayton moved that the Clerk investigate the taking of a lighting rate on an area at Waiuta and report at next meeting. Seconded by Cr. Mclnroe and carried. W. E. Clark forwarded £6 10s 6d collected by him at Inangahua towards the cost of a Plunket and Rest Room. L. E. Morgan, for Goldwater Mines, forwarded application for ordinary prospecting license, which crosses part of Waiuta-South Blackwater road.—The Council resolved to offer no obpection. The Minister of Public Works wrote re maintenance of Springs Junction County-Boundary road.—Cr. Clayton moved and Cr. Mclnroe seconded that the Council agree, provided the allocation of the Council does not exceed £5O per year. —Carried. Mrs Mitchell, secretary Women’s Institute, Waiuta, wrote re lighting Waiuta streets. Mrs M| Heenan wrote re drain running through her section at Waiuta.—Referred to the Engineer for attention. A. R. Thompson wrote asking if the Council could assist towards cost of road to mill site situate in Block 111, Mawheraiti Survey District. —C. J. O’Regan moved and Cr. Watson seconded, that the Engineer be instructed to report on same.—Carried. Murray Creek Consolidated Goldfields wrote asking for improvements to Murray Creek road for cartage of coal. The sum of £lO was ottered. Goldwater Mines Ltd. asked for improvements to fords in Snowy River for transport of machinery.—Cr. McGregor moved and Cr. Scott seconded, that the matter be referred to the Public Works Department.—Carried. Waiuta Library Committee wrote asking for grant fpr funds.—Cr. McGregor moved and Cr. Scott seconded that the sum of £lO be granted.—Carried. New Welcome Gold Mining Company wrote asking that work on track be expedited.— Cr. Clayton moved and Cr. P. O’Regan seconded, that the contractor be advised that unless the work is completed in one month, the deposit will be forfeited.—Carried. The Engineer was instructed to call tenders for the supply of 600 cubic yards of gravel for Blackwater-Waiuta road. The chairman, Crs. McGregor, P. J. O’Regan and Watson, with the Engineer, were nominated as a committee to investigate the Reefton waterworks and to report at next meeting. The report of the Traffic Inspector was adopted. Tenders were received for culvert on Maruia road: H. Goody £197, Chandler and Hasler £2Bo.—Cr. O'Regan moved that the work be offered to Mr Goody at the Engineer’s estimate of £l6o.—Seconded by cr Watson and carried. The road diversion at Mirfin’s bridge was referred to the Engineer. Cr. P. J. O’Regan moved that the Engineer inspect river erosion at Smith’s farm at Cronadun and report to Council.—Seconded by Cr. Mclnroe and carried. Cr. P. J. O’Regan moved and the chairman seconded, that Mr A. Palmer be appointed permanent traffic inspector. —Carried. The chairman and two town members were appointed a finance committee. Cr. Watson stated he had been approached by Crushington residents, who asked that the Council call tenders for sale and removal of the Crushington Hall, and that the consent of the trustees be asked for sale. He moved accordingly—Seconded by Cr. McGregor and carried. Cr. McGregor moved that a light be placed at each intersection in Broadway and that same be swung in the centre of the streets. —Seconded by Cr. Watson and carried. Cr. McGregor moved that the Engineer be asked to submit an estimate for the repairing of footpaths in Broadway, from Bridge Street to Cinnamon Street in either concrete blocks or bitumen.—Seconded by the chairman and carried. The Engineer was instructed to inspect Inwood’s Bridge and Trim's road with a view to repairing same. Cr. Clayton moved and Cr. J. O’Regan seconded, that the authority for Council to borrow up to £6OOO be confirmed.—Carried. Cr. Clayton moved and Cr. P. J. O’Regan seconded that the Clerk prepare estimates of receipts and expenditure for the forthcoming year. —Carried.
At the monthly meeting of the
Inangahua Hospital Board Messrs J. B. Auld, F. Seawright, G. B. Mclnroe, T. R. Watson, P. J. O’Regan, W. S. Clark, F. W. Archer and W. Clayton attended. The chairman’s honorarium was lixed at £25 a year. Mr Clayton proposed Mr J. B. Auld as chairman, and Mr Archer seconded, both paying tribute to Mi Auld’s work in past years. There being no further nomination, Mr Auld was declared duly elected. Mi Auld returned thanks for his election and welcomed the two new members, Messrs Clark and P. J. O’Regan. He regretted that Messrs W. Blackadder and Teasdale had not sought re-elec-tion. Mr Clark thanked the chairman for his welcome, as did M* O’Regan. Messrs J. C. Rodden and Kent waited upon the board re obtaining a section adjoining the hospital for the erection of a pubac library. Mr Rodden said they were using a room in the union office, but the library was outgrowing this room. The section was ideal for the purpose. They were negotiating for a grant from the Government for a library, but the Department would not authorise this unless they had a title to the ground. They wanted sufficient land for the erection of two rooms 18x18 with perhaps room for an extension. The chairman said it there was any possibility of being able to assist them he was favourable. He thanked the deputation for their attendance and they would learn the result of the board’s consideration later. Mr Seawright moved that the chairman, secretary and Messis Mclnroe and Clayton be a committee to visit the spot and make the necessary arrangements with the Health Department.—Seconded by Mr Clark and carried. A male patient in the Reefton Hospital wrote complaining of the attitude of nurses in hospital. Mr Seawright moved that it be an instruction to nurses io address patients by their proper title. Mr Archer seconded the motion, which was lost. Mr D. Scott wrote resigning position as porter at Reefton Hospital.—Resignation accepted and applications to be called for the position. The Department of Health wrote re appointment of secretary, stating that the Department considered Mr J. Willis unlitted foi the position owing to his youth and Inexperience, and urging the boaid to reconsider its decision.—Mr Archei moved, Mr Clark seconded, that the Department be informed that the board has taken all particulars into consideration in making the appointment of secretary.—Carried. The Medical Superintendent reported: Admitted 34, discharged 35, died 2, remaining 33, X-ray 11> births 7, anaesthetics 8, out-patients 7, attendances 18. Matron Kane lepoited. I require for hospital use coal scuttles 7, lire shovels 12, pokers 12, ash pans 7. Twelve new basket chairs are required for maternity ward. The fireplaces and door and window fastenings in new building are faulty, also the inside paint work is incomplete, and it is necessary to have the new screens as early as possible. Edna Jones is doing relieving wardsmaid for one week. The following tenders were received: Groceries, Harold Bros (accepted); wines and spirits, Harold Bros, (accepted); firewood, R. L. Craig £1 10s per cord (accepted); bread, WAugust Is, Harold Bios. Is, V Mori Is per 41b. loaf. Mr Watson moved and Mr O’Regan seconded that the tenderers be given a month about. —Carried. Meat, W. McVicar (accepted) ; funerals, S. Austin. The secretary was instructed to write and inform the matron that supplies must be got from the successful tenderers.
