Rugby League fans were well catered for in Canterbury during the week-end, when two South Island trial matches were played. On Saturday the Inangahua and Canterbury teams met, and although both teams reserved their best players for the Sunday match, good football was witnessed. It was not un-
til the second spell that the Inangahua players found their feet, and from then on gave a good account of themselves. In the backs, Watson played a fine game, as did Cutbush, whose tackling was a revelation. Smythe and McLennan were the pick of the others. In the forwards, Walshe played a fine game, and Fox, McManus and Downes did their share. On Sunday the combined West Coast team defeated Canterbury after a very interesting match. Orman gave a fine display of clean hooking and this largely contributed to the Coast’s win. Glynn was the outstanding forward on the field, and .Orsbourn and Clark were not far behind. The former must be considered unlucky in not gaining a place in the team, although he will play in the trial match in Auckland. Clarkin and Pearson also played well. The star back was Kiely, who kept the international Ray Brown well in check. P. Scott gave a good showing behind the. pack, and great things are expected of him in Auckland. Roach on the) wing played splendidly, and but for, poor positional play must have been seriously considered. Beban, Kirk] and Crowe showed up well, but ( Mountford had a day off, but even allowing for this was’ the better of the two full-backs on the day, pnd Taylor must be considered very lucky in catching the selector’s eye. The Marist (Greymouth) team journeyed to Denniston on Sunday,] and after a fine open game defeated, the local team by 15 to 3. Rivals and Rangers played a friendly match at Millerton.
Reports from the Buller - district are very encouraging, as at the moment the entry of three more senior and two junior teams is expected. There is no doubt that the future of Rugby League in Buller is very bright, and the displays of their representatives in Christchurch show the players to be of a very fine type. After an interruption of two weeks, the Inangahua competitions will be tackled seriously, and some good football should result; It has been reported that another junior team is to be entered in the competition, and this should have the effect of further strengthening the position of the code in Inangahua. With an impending challenge in view for the Northern Union Cup, the Inangahua players will be hard at it to gain physical fitness, and keen competition will be found in the attempts to gain places in the team for this important match.
North Island Trial AUCKLAND TOO GOOD. AUCKLAND, May 18. There was a Rugby League football trial played at Carlaw Park this afternoon between the Auckland reps and the rep team of the rest of the North Island. The match proved very one-si’ded, Auckland winning by sixty-seven points to fourteen. The match was, therefore, disappointing to the selectors, who were looking for talent for the inter-island game next Saturday, and also for possibilities for the New Zealand team which is to tour Australia this year.
