When the flood waters leave the large area still covered between the main Napier-Wairoa road and the foothills north of the Esk River, farmers will be faced with the unenviable task of disposing of scores of drowned sheep that have been caught in the submerged fences. Where they could be reached some of the carcasses have been skinned, but the neighbourhood has been rendered unpleasant because of the odour of putrefaction.
