At the monthly meeting of the Moana W.1., there was a good attendance. Mrs. Collier gave an interesting talk on the West Coast Federation. Mrs. Rankin demonstrated how to make button-holes. The Roll Call, “If I had my life over again, what would I do or be?” was discussed with great amusement. Mrs. Rankin won the competition for the best pine needle article. The hostesses were Mesdames Collier and Cornish.

An opossum found in the crater of Mount Egmont has been an object of interest for climbers during the past week or two. The little animal is not expected to survive his adventure, as he is dependent entirely upon scraps of food left by climbers who have vainly tried to catch him. Unless he finds his way down again to his natural habitat, which appears unlikely, or is captured by a climber after he has become took weals to run away, he will perish from starvation and cold.

One unusual aspect of the recent flooding in Hawke’s Bay has been the appearance of a large number o? small frogs in a great portion of thn land which was for a time under water, and which still carries a great deal of surface water. Motorists on the Napier-Hastings via Fernhill high way have recently noticed thousands of frogs on the roads, particularly at night, and huge numbers of them are now lying dead on the road, where they have been killed by passing cars There was a similar visitation in Napier in 1932, when there was extensive flooding in the old TutaekuN riverbed.

When Mr Wi Tauroa and his family returned to their home at Arapawanui, Hawke’s Bay, after attending a tangi at Tongoio they were astounded to discover that where their home stood before they left, nothing remained but a strip of flood-torn ground. Besides the house, many other buildings have gone, and alse many head of stock. Mr Tauroa’s home was a large one and fully furn ished. A search downstream resulted in the finding of many articles from the house, also portions of the holism itself. The owner believes that the residence and other buildings were carried bodily out to sea.

An eel sft long, with a girth of 14in, was caught in the 6in inlet pipe con necting the Western Springs lake Auckland, and the swimming pool at the motor camp on Saturday. Portion of the earthenware pipe had .to be dug up before the obstruction could bo removed. The eel was observe! swimming in the lake on Saturday morning, and got behind the screens, but efforts to catch it were unsuccessful. -The eel evidently travelled along Ihe pipe until it reached a point a short distance from the pool, wher-’ the diameter was reduced to 3in, and there it became stuck. When removed, the eel was weighed at the Auckland Zoo, and turned the scales at 341 b.

Study of the life of the beautiful Monarch butterfly is making a fascinating hobby for many Auckland children at present. They gather the caterpillars from the leaves of the “swan” plant, place them securely—for they are energetic things—in net-ting-covered boxes, and feed them carefully with the proper foliage. After a few days they find that each long, fat caterpillar has turned into a chrysalis of green and gold. A few more days, and the butterfly emerges from the chrysalis, which has by now turned a blackish red, to unfold its gorgeous wings—gold and black, with "embroidery” of white and velvet blue.
