MAY DAY

MINERS’ HOLIDAY ON MONDAY.

May Day this year falls to-morrow (Sunday), and, according to the Coal Miners’ Agreement the holiday is not transferrable to Monday. However, following upon a generally expressed desire on the part of the miners to have the holiday on Monday, Mr A. McLagan (Secretary of the United Mine Workers), consulted the West Coast Mine Managers, and the majority being agreeable, May Day is to be taken on Monday. It should be noted that Monday is not a holiday according to the strict interpretation of the Coal Mines Agreement, and therefore any safety men required to work on Monday will be entitled to ordinary rates only.
