HOKITIKA NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent.] HOKITIKA, April 29. It is proposed out of the profits of the local Savings Bank during the past year to make grants totalling £7OO as follows:—Westland Hospital—for furnishing etc., children’s Ward £400; Crippled children (extra provision) £5O; Westland Provincial Organisation Scholarships £100; General —Plunket Society £5O; Library Committee £5O; Salvation Army (local branch relief work) £5O.

The question of the protection of, the river-bank along Gibson Quay from the flood waters of the Hokitika River, came before the Borough Council at its meeting last evening. Members recognised the gravity of the position, and resolved that the Resident Engineer at Greymouth bo requested to carry out proposals to raise the stopbank along Gibson Quay, east of the railway bridge, as laid out in his report on July 26. 19315. At its annual meeting the Kiwi Football Club elected the following officers:—Coaches: Senior—Messrs J. Devaney and .Lawson; Junior—D. Diedrichs and L. Leslie; third grade —R. Roberts and M. Davidson. Heinz (Works Committee Chairman) reported that the horse machine for cleaning footpaths was almost completed, and he hoped to start on footpaths next week. On the motion of Crs Parry and Heinz J. T. Langford was granted a lease of part of municipal reserve No. 537 for ,21 yefars, ‘subject to the fire bell town and station remaining and Fire Board interests being protected. The Board wrote opposing removal of the stations for the reserve. It was reported by the New Zealand Refriger- 1 ating Company that it had delivered here 50 sheep and 8 lamb carcases last month. The employment officer advised a holiday payment under Scheme 13 was disallowed as wet days could not be paid for in lieu of holidays under the award. A Ballinger and 26 other petitioners drew attention to danger and loss to residents through flooding between Fitzherbert Street and Bealey Street, asking some suitable protection for low-lying parts of the town from danger in rainy! periods. It was resolved as above, mentioned, to ask that the resident Engineer confer with the Council! and erect a stopbank on Gibson Quay. Mr F. M. Singer’s application for a street light in Hampden St. was referred to the Works Committee. Permission was given Mrs Agnew, Rimu, for a concert to be held at the Regent Theatre on May Bth in'aid of the children’s ward at the hospital. Itj was decided to grant a request to provide at least once a week sixtythree thousand gallons of water to fill a bath at the State School for swimming facilities for the pupils. It was decided to support the Automobile Association’s request that the Railway Department again tar seal Weld St. railway crossing. The treasurer reported a credit balance in the general account of £686 6s lOd, water supply account of 19s 2d; water supply repayment account of £320 13s 7d. Accounts amounting to £338 17s 9d were passed for payment. The Hokitika Savings Bank 72nd annual statement shows deposits of

£172,079, with 2251 depositors. The i bank has cash recovered £69,645 on' fixed deposit and in current accounts,! also Government stock £20,008 and' local body debentures, £17,873. There was a I large attendance of buyers. Clark, 1 springer at £7 7s 6d, 1 cow at £7 2s 6d, 1 heifer at £4 17s 6d, 2 forward cows at £3 17s 6d, 1 fat cow at £6 17s 6d, 1 at £4 17s 6d, 1 at £4 7s 6d. 1 bullock at £7 2s 6d, 3 runners at £3 2s, 4 18-mon. steers at £5 7s 6d.
