CARMELITE SISTERS
AUCKLAND CONVENT, OPENED. [Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, February 14. Clad in coarse brown serge habits, and heavily veiled, nine Sisters entered the Chapel of the Carmelite Monastery at Mount Roskill, yesterday, and knelt at the altar rail. Bishop Liston then handed the key to the Mother Superior, who closed. the door of the monastery, and locked it from the inside. This was an impressive part of the ceremony at which Bishop Liston enclosed the Carmelite Sisters, and blessed the Convent building and chapel. From the moment the Mother Superior received, the key from the Bishop, all external contact with the world was cut off, and the nine Sisters may now receive visitors only at the grille, which is curtained. The Sisters have devoted themselves to a life-time of seclusion, contemplation, and prayer. The establishment of the Order is an innovation in the North Island, the only other Convent of the kind in New Zealand being in Christchurch.
