OPIUM RAID

Chinese Premises

STRONGLY BARRICADED. [Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, February 9. • Large and valuable quantities of opium, pipes, lamps, scales, and other paraphernalia were seized, and the Chinese proprietor was arrested, when detectives carried out a surprise raid on premises at Greys Avenue, in the City, shortly before 10 o’clock to-night. Together with another person, found on the premises, the arrested Chinese will appear in the Magistrate’s Court. The raid was exeepted so swiftly that the Chinese were taken com•i4pletely by surprise. The premises were very heavily barricated. Over five cwt of barbed wire had been distributed across the roof, while all of the windows were stoutly barred with lengths of iron, one inch thick.
