TRIBUTE TO N.Z.
BY BRITISH MINISTER At London Banquet „ I [Ans. & N.Z. Cable Assn.] (Received February 9, 7.40 p.m.) LONDON, February 9. The New Zealand Society, at the Savoy Hotel, London, held a banquet to commemorate the ninety-eighth birthday of the Dominion. The distinguished guests present included the Earl of Liverpool (ex-Governor-General); Sir Harry Tyford; the Lord Mayor of London; Count Van Limberg (the Netherlands Minister at London); Mr Dulanty (the Irish Free State Minister at London); Admiral Chatfield; Mr Parrair (Chief Marshal); Sir Cyril Newall, Sir Firoz Khannoon; Sir Fabian Ware; and Sir Edward Harding. Among the speakers was Rt. Hon. Malcolm MacDonald (Secretary of State for the Dominion) who asked Mr Jordan to convey to New Zealand his greetings on the Dominion’s ninety-eighth birthday. Mr Mac Don aid added that, in terms of age, the Dominion was in its dotage, but a visitor to the League of Nations Council, on hearing Mr Jordan, would know that, not only the experience and wisdom of age, but enterprise and the fire of youth were in the Dominion’s participation in world affairs. Mr Jordan was playing a distinguished part in building up a young nation and in advancing the welfare of the Empire. .
Mr Hal Williams, on behalf of the Society,, said that Mr Jordan’s career was one of the romances of democracy. He and his wife, because of their friendliness and sincerity, had endeared themselves to London, carrying out their mission with dignity and ability. Mr Jordan, after reading a cable of greeting from Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, outlined the Dominion’s trade figures, indicating New Zealand’s prosperity. He said: “New Zealand owes a lot to London, but, whatever the amount, it is quite safe.” A New Zealand Day service was held in the afternoon at the Saint Lawrence Jewry Church, and it was conducted by Rev. A. Lombardini. A reception at the Girdlers Hall followed.
