CANOE UPSET

WITH FOUR ABOARD New Plymouth Tragedy [Per Press Association]. NEW PLYMOUTH. February 8. When a canvas canoe, containing four young men, overturned in NewPlymouth harbour to-night, Reginald Davis, aged twenty, was drowned. , Richard Newall, aged 23, was taken to the hospital, but it is understood that he is now in a satisfactory condition. The harbour was calm when the canoe put out at about 8.15 p.m. When it was a few hundred yards off Ngamotu Beach, the small craft capsized and the four young men were thrown into the water. One of them, A. Segar said afterwards that his foot was caught m tne grating, but he managed to free mmself, and to give assistance to Newall and Davis, and L. Beattie. He took Newall to the upturned canoe, and told him to hang on. Beattie also reached the canoe, ana Segar swam back to look for Davis who, however, had disappeared in the darkness. Segar and Beattie swam ashore for assistance. A yacht, manned by Edmond Asquith and 1 Ivan Hodder, cruising m the harbour, took Newail from the canoe and landed him on the beach, Where he was attended at the Palladium, and was taken tc- the hospital. where he is reported to be comfortable. . . , . Davis’s body, despite dragging, n<ta not been found at mid-night.
