FOR EMPIRE GAMES Athletes and Swimmers [Per Press Association], WELLINGTON, December 15. The following athletes were selected for the Empire Games by the Council to-night:—Matthews, one mile and three miles; Boot, half mile and mile; Lay, javelin throw; Sharpley, 120 yards hurdles; Tjrie, quarter mile; Quinn, 100 yards and 220 yards; Leckie, hammer throw; Morgan, discus throw; Sayers, quarter-mile; Geddes, six miles; Miss Forbes, high jump; Miss Mitchell, javelin; Miss Lumley, 100 yards and 220 yards; Miss Strachan, broad jump and 100 yards; Miss Tong. The following were selected conditionally on a satisfrxmry trial on or before December 22: Pullar, one mile; Allen, half mile and one mile; Weller, six miles; and one of Anderson, Rail and Finlayson, 440 yards hurdles. The mile relay team will be chosen from the selected men. The Council decided not to avail itself of a Wellington offer to release the coach, Mr. Bitch, for the period of the trip. NEW PLYMOUTH, December 15. In a specially arranged trial with a view to selection for the Empire Games team, Jack Davies, in the baths to-night registered 3.5 2-5 in the 220 yards’ breast-stroke, four seconds outside of the New Zealand record. Davies was short of training. _ CHRISTCHURCH, December 15. Breaking the N.Z. record for 440 yards by nearly two seconds, L. Newell the Canterbury and Dominion title-holder, definitely established himself to-night as a strong claimant fop inclusion in the New Zealand swimming team for the Empire Games. In an attempt on the record of smin 13 2-ssec, set by G. Bridson (Auckland) nearly six years ago, Newell swam the distance >n smin 11 2-5 sec.
