KING’S BIRTHDAY

Holiday Pay WHAT ABOUT DECEMBER 13 ? ’ — [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, November 29. A possibility of employers having to pay twice in one year for a King’s Birthday holiday was referred this evening to the Prime Minister, Mr, Savage, who said that the matter had not yet been brought officially to his notice. It was pointed out to the Prime Minister that the actual date of the King’s Birthday was December 13. A holiday was observed on June 9. It was stipulated in certain legislation and in Arbitration Court awards that the King’s Birthday was to be a paid holiday, but a change in the date for. the purpose of holiday observance had not been validated by legislation. As a result, employers who paid their workers for a day’s holiday on June 9. might be required to pay them again on December 13.

“I do not know what the actual position is,” said Mr. Savage, “but I will certainly look into the matter. It is extremely doubtful whether any validating legislation can be passed this year.”
