ARGENTINE RIOT
SHOTS FIRED INTO CROWDED HALL. ELEVEN KILLED. , I’Aust. & N.Z. Cable Assn.] (Received August 16, at 7.45 p.m.) RIO DE JANEIRO, August 16. It is reported That eleven persons, including a child and two women, were killed and that scores were injured, in a riot at City of Campos. A number of shots were fired in a densely packed hall at the Fascist headquarters. Fascists poured out - the hall. They clashed with the attackers.- Mobile squads then quelled the fighting.
hit by several bombs from Spanish Government aircraft. This violation of the undertakings solemnly given by the Nazi Government was still further exceeded by the order given oy Hitler for the blood of German sailors (victims of German “intervention in the Spanish war) to be revenged by ' the bombardment of an open town, which resulted in hundreds of innocent women and children being killed and wounded. A few days after this outrage, which aroused the greatest indignation in the whole world, Goering announced at a demonstration in Berlin as the principal on which the Nazi Government acts that “when German blood is spilt, foreign mood must flow also!” Hitler wanted to satisfy German “honour” with the blood of the women and children who were the victims in Almeria, but he has only succeeded in staining it still further. Perhaps, however, it has at least become clear to the world what the real situation is as regards the “non-intervention” of the fascist States in Spain! The protest of Ihe IFTU runs as follows:—“The IFTU has already repeatedly denounced the participation of Germany and Italy in the Spanish civil war, in the more or less camouflaged form of volunteers. As had been feared, it is now seen that these two countries are taking advantage oi the supervision of non-intervention to increase their support to the rebels, especially in the zones where their actions cannot be checked by the other Powers. The bombardment of Almeria by German warships in tle presence of a British ship, demonstrates that these “observers” are not even restrained by the presence of others. This act of open warfare, Dy which Germany not only violates the principles of international law but directly threatens peace, shows that she does' not shrink from anything, and that the pacifist Powers must react with energy and determination o make Germany see that she will not be left free to make war in Spain against the legal government. The IFTU again appeals to the conscience of the workers and draws atention to the great danger which at present faces the world if calm but energetic action is not taken at once to demonstrate to Fascism that democracy has within itself forces capable of preventing the Fascists from dragging the world into the misery of a war. It is up to the democratic governments to take the necessary action to defend international law and thus to safeguard, not only the independence of Spain, but also the peace of the world!” . Before starting their meeting on the 2nd June, tne delegates and technical advisers of the Workers’ Group (IFTU) of the International Labour Conference in Geneva, lodged a strong protest, on behalf of the woik ers’ organisations in the twenty-tour countries represented at the meeting, "against me criminal outrages perpetrated by the Fascist States against democratic and republican Spain, and sent telegrams of sympathy to the Spanish National Trade Union Centre and the Prime Minister of SP Juan Negrin, the Prime Minister or Spain, thereupon wired the rollowino- reply to Comrade Schevenels in Geneva :-"The Prime Minister to Schevenels, International Labour Conference, Geneva: On behalf of the Government and in my own name, express thanks for the greetings of the delegates at the Labour Conference and the protest against the index reliable attack on America. Trust that the spirit of our fight will strengthen the conviction of the organised workers that their own interests are linked up with our victory.
