Ngahere’s Surprise Win BLACKBALL’S CRICKET SCORE. A feature of yesterday’s League football matches for the Bradshaw Cup, was Runanga’s defeat. at the hands of Ngahere by 28 points to 6. The Ngahere team turned on fine football and thoroughly deserved their win. Blackball had it all over Marist at Wingham Park, and after a small lead at half-time, they piled on the points to win by 43 to 3. Naturally, the game lacked interest, but the Blackball team’s victory left no doubt that they will be hard to beat in the competition. NGAHERE 28 v. RUNANGA 6. Before a large crowd at Ngahere yesterday, the home team scored a surprise victory over Runanga, winning by 28 points to 6 after a good game. Ngahere had the better of the day and won in a convincing manner, For the winners J. Weir scored two tries and converted two, J./Webber (2), E. Tuck, A. Gibson (2) and J. McGuire being the other try getters. Pattison and Glynn scored for Runanga. e Mr M. O’Brien refereed. BLACKBALL 43 v. MARIST 3. „ Under ideal conditions, Blackball outclassed Marist by 43 points to 3 at Wingham Park yesterday afternoon, before a good attendance. Leading by 5 points to 3 at half-time, the country team had things much their own way in the second spell, and at no stage were they in danger. Although it was not expected* that the game would produce high-class football, some spectacular passing movements were staged by the Blackball backs, who were particularly impressive in the second spell. The handling of the Marist backs was much less accurate, and many good chances were missed owing to faulty work in this department. The forwards were more evenly matched, Perrin and Calder being outstanding on either side. The Marist team became badly disorganised in the closing stages and for the last 15 minutes Blackball scored with almost monotonous regularity. The teams were:—

Marist: M. Morel, P. Beban, P„ Malone, J. Devonport, R. Pollock, B. Casey, J. Griffen, P. Affleck, W. Seguin, J. Calder, D. Pearson. R. McQiiinn, P. Grogan. Blackball: R. Mountford. J. Clark, Pascoe, J. Roberts, .1. Dodds, Kirk, W. McNaughton, Goodall, Driscoll, Perrin, Bruce, R. Clark, H. Ritchie. Winning the toss Marist defended the northern end, playing with the sun at their back. From the kick, Blackball were on attack, but a~good save, by Morel prevented the forwards from scoring. Marist took a turn at attack and faulty handling by Dodds nearly cost Blackball a score. The ball eventually went out' inside the 25, and a penalty against Marist took play back to greens’ territory. P. Beban secured just outside Marist 25 and made a great dash down thejside line, in-passing to Grogan, who endeavoured to touch down, but was beaten for possession. Blackball backs took play to Marist territory, where they indulged in a long passing movement, a forward pass spoiling their chance. Morpl was penalised for a play-the-ball infringement just in front of the posts and Dodds goaled.—Blackball 2; Marist 0. After Blackball had kept in Marist territory for some time, the ball came from a scrum to Kirk, who sent Pascoe away, the latter passing to Roberts, who scored. Dodds’ kick missed.—-Black-balls; Marist 0. Blackball were awarded a penalty when Pearson shepherded Devonport inside Marist 25, but Dodds kicked high, Calder securing and kicking out at the halfway. A promising Blackball movement was initiated by Kirk who sent Dodds away. His pass to Roberts was missed and Devonport collected to be tackled, the ball being taken by Casey who also lost possession. Pollock came in and secured to score. Pollock failed to convert. —Marist 3; Blackball 5. Splendid defence by Mountford kept Marist at bay for some time. The run of play then went against Marist, whose defence held until half-time sounded, with the score: Blackball 5; Marist 3. Soon after the resumption Blackball were awarded a free kick at half way, and Dodds sent the ball well upfield, but the attack was repulsed for a time. Roberts put in a strong run on the sideline, but was forced out inside Maria’s 25. The Blackball backs led by Dodds, staged a good cross-field passing movement, but Pascoe was forced out. The Blackball forwards kept play on Marist’s line and from play the ball, Kirk secured to send Roberts over for a try. Roberts missed the kick. —Blackball 8; Marist 3. Blackball’s attack sharpened, and they tested Marist severely until the ball came out to McNaughton from a scrum, being sent on to Kirk. He passed to Pascoe, who cut in and scored. Dodds converted. — Blackball 13; Marist 3. Dodds and Kirk indulged in a fine co-ordinated passing movement, each handling three times, and Kirk eventually sent Pascoe over for a try under the posts. Dodds converted. —Blackball 18; Marist 3. From a scrum at half-way, Perrin broke away and passed all the Marist backs to score an effortless try under the posts. Dodds converted. Blackball 23; Marist 3.- Marist were now rapidly tiring whilst Blackball s handling improved considerably, and they were definitely on top. Pollock intercepted Just inside half-way, to cut through and dash for the line unopposed, but he fell when only a yard off, and Blackball forced. Grogan made an effort, but was stopped on the line, and the Blackball forwards took play to Marist territory. Dodds

sent a good kick up and Driscoll secured from the loose to score under the posts. Dodds converted. —Blackball 28; Marist 3. R. Clark secured at half-way and short punted over the heads of Grogan and Pollock, to secured and send Perrin over. R. Clark converted with a great kick from the side-line. —Blackball 33; Marist 3. Roberts made a good effort along the side-line, but was taken by P. Beban', near the corner. Pascoe sent Kirk away, and the latter side-stepped past Grogan to score. Dodds converted.—Blackball 38; Marist 3. From near Marist’s line, the ball, came to Mountlord from a scrum and he ran to half-way, passing to Roberts, who had no opposition in scoring. He converted his own try, and full-time sounded with the scores Blackball 43; Marist 3. Mr S. Smith was referee.

TEAMS DEFAULT. Runanga juniors and thirds both defaulted to their Blackball opponents yesterday. WIN FOR MARIST JUNIORS. Playing at Rapahoe, Marist Juniors defeated the home team by 17 points to 15, after a fast and even game. Mr. G. Pope refereed. MARIST FOURTHS WIN. At Runanga, Marist Fourths defeated Runanga by 13 to 8. Dwyer scored two tries for the' winners,- and Zampese a try, which he converted and kicked a penalty. For Runanga, Finn and Maskill scored, Maskill converting one try. Mr. A. Williams was referee.
