SPORT COUNCIL

OLYMPIC ASSN’S. PROPOSALS. — [Per Press Association] WELLINGTON, August 10. The views of the New Zealand Olympic Association about the proposed National Council of Sport were formulated at a meeting this evening. They emphasised physical education in schools rather than the direct control of sports bodies. Recommendations to be made to the Minister were: (1) The formation of a national council of physical health and recreation; (2) a strong request that there should be no compulsion on individuals to take part in a particular sport, but that the best method would be to provide facilities and equipment, and stimulate a desire for participation; (3) that the control of individual sports be left to the existing national organisation; (4) that the paramount function he to organise and control compulsory physical education, and using the latest methods in organised recreational games; (5) that physical training be continued until the pupil reaches at the least 21 years of age. Other general recommendations included a comprehensive survey of the existing facilities for sport. The association recommended that a fund be provided by lotteries and by the appropriation of the proceeds of the amusement tax.
