STOCKTON NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent] Mrs. J. Slack, left the township on Monday for Greymouth, and will be the guest of Mr. and Mrs. S. Robertson. Mr. J. Clarke, has left for Wellington, and will witness the first test match between New Zealand and the Springboks. Mr. Clarke will be away for the best part of three weeks, and intends visiting Blenheim during his trip. Mi-. D. Lambert, has returned after an extended absence. Mr. Lambert has been receiving treatment at Hanmer Springs, and will shortly leave on a holiday in an endeavour to complete his return to health. Mrs. Simpson, of Seddonville, spent a few days’ holiday with Mr. and Mrs. C. Steele last .week and returned on Saturday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. F. Woods arid child, were visitors last week from the Nelson district and returned home towards the end of the week. Mr. W. Lambert, of Westport, paid a visit to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Lambert, on Sunday. Mr. J. Morgan, is spending a short holiday in Christchurch. Mrs. Lowery arid children, returned to Nelson on Monday after an extended holiday with friends in Stockton. In the early part of last week, Mr. J. Jack, of Millerton, met with a serious accident in the Stockton Mine and was immediately sent to the Westport Hospital. It appears that Mr. Jack is suffering from pelvic injuries, and is as well as can be expected under the circumstances. Fortunately, he has a robust constitution and this will be a' valuable asset to him in his trial. All -wish him a speedy recovery. Mr. Young, who some ago received similar injuries, is still an inmate of the Buller Hospital. His condition is improving and with youth on his side, he should again be fit and well. At the Whist Tournament held in the Stockton Hall on Wednesday, Mrs H. Evans won . the ladies’ prize and Mr. J. Morgan the men’s. There was a large nurnber present. The proceeds are to be used in aid of the children’s trip to Christchurch on the 17th. of . August. Work has again been started on the Stockton swimming bath and, if i* can be finalised before the summer arrives, the residents of the district will greatly appreciate it. One of the coldest days experienced this winter was Friday last. Snow, hail and frost, with a driving wind, all helped to “keep the home fires burning.”

Mr. Baxendale, Jnr., of Ngakawau, has taken over the store formerly 'conducted by Mr. W. Armstrong. It is the intention of Mr. Baxendale to eater for the public in some new lines which will be appreciated. The Denniston Soccer Juniors paid a visit to Stockton on Sunday to play the Stockton team. The boys from Denniston were very much younger than the Stockton side and very much lighter in build. However, it is pleasing to see the officials persevering with the young players, and, although the Denniston players were beaten by six goals to two, they were in no way disgraced. Mr. C. Steele, had charge of the whistle, and had an easy task, as the game was played in an exceptionally friendly spirit. The Stockton Mine continues to work the ten shifts per fortnight. The Executive of the Ngakawau Miners’ Union will meet the Management on Sunday next to discuss a new local agreement covering conditions not provided for in the West Coast Agreement. The ballot for official positions on the National Council and for Australian delegate, will take place this week. Messrs Mcßean and Roberts will act as scrutineers. Miss V. Finlayson, who has been relieving the Stockton Postmistress, Mrs. Ilton, will he leaving to-day, Thursday, and will spend her annual holidays in Christchurch.
