SMALL “BOOKIE” AT RICCARTON. [Per Press Association], CHRISTCHURCH, August 11. A fine of £3O in default three months’ imprisonment, was imposed to-day on Wiliam Joseph Brosnahan, who pleaded guilty to bookmaking at Riccarton yesterday. It was stated by the police that Brosnahan was taking bets outside the course and had in nis possession £3B/2/-. He had been fined £2O for a similar offence a few years ago. Counsel said that Brosnahan was doing business only in a small way. CAR CONVERTER. WELLINGTON, August 11. Two years’ reformative detention was imposed on Thomas Henry Hale by Mr Mosley, S.M., for conversion of a car at Newtown, an offence for which, the Magistrate remarked, accused had been before the Court a number of times.

POVERTY BAY SENTENCES. GISBORNE, August 11. In the Supreme Court this morning, Mr Justice Reed sentenced prisoners as follows:— Pani Aurpouri, carnal knowledge, one month’s imprisonment.' Albert David Agnew, breaking and entering, with intent, two years’ probation. Raymond Heath Johnston, fraudulently stating that he had posted a letter, ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within twelve months, and fined £lO.
