WESTPORT NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent] Welcome Home: WESTPORT, August 9. After the adverse weather experienced last week it seemed as if the clerk in charge of the meteorological department thought it fit to invest the week-end with ideal conditions for the Bullei’ representatives visit to Greymouth in quest of the Seuuon Shield and for the wonderful reception accorded to them on their triumphant return yesterday afternoon \vith a fine day, the Municipal band playing lively airs and everyone in a happy mood it would be difficult to picture anything more fitting on the occasion. Crowds thronged Palmerston Street and as the busses arrived, conveying the victors, with the Seddon Shield prominently displayed, and followed by a procession of private. cars, they were greeted by wild cheering. The footpaths were lined with people and as the procession to the Albion Hotel there 1 were outbursts of enthusiasm and the welcome given to the team though quickly arranged was a striking emphasis of the delight of all to see the much coveted trophy back in Westport again. The appearance of -he team on the balcony of the Albion Hotel was the sequel for further enthusiastic demonstrations and to the accompaniment of the band the large gathering sang For They are Jolly Good Fellows. Mr. F. B. Keating president of the Buller Rugby Union was the first speaker and as a result of the severe test his vocal accomplishments were put to with barracking at Greymouth his efforts were not very audible and were necessarily curtailed. However, he congratulated the side on their tine showing and their excellent behaviour both on and off the field. Mr. J. M. Robertson deputy Mayor in the absence of Mr. Kilkenny who was unavoidably prevented from being present welcomed the team on behalf of the citizens and congratulated them on their victory. Mr. H. Casey manager of the team paid a glowing’tribute to Orman’s hooking and to the team work of the side generally. Mr. Orman (Capt.) and Mr. McDonald (Coach) also snoke and in response to a call on Mr. Butterfield who had the distinction of scoring the winning try he also made his appearance and was given a rousing cheer. Cheers were given for Buller and Coast and a very enthusiastic reception closed. Buller L.R.C.:

A meeting of the Executive Committee of the Buller L.L.C, was held during the week-end in the Labour rooms. The chairman, Mr. L. E. Richardson (Waimangaroa Branch) was congratulated on his appointment to the presidency of the Buller L.R.C The secretary (Mr. W. P. Jackson) was authorised to procure a new set of books from Labour the Book Room A few matters of a more or less “domestic” character were referred to the general secretary. Appointments to the Legislative Council were discussed and the secretary was instructed to place the views of the meeting in connection with the matter before the Prime Minister. The receiving of deputations by members of Parliament . and Ministers who visited the Buller district, was also the subject of discussion and it was decided to place before the National executive recommendations arrived at by the meeting. The name of Mr. W. H. Woodcock president of the Westport Branch of the Labour Party, foi appointment to the Upper House, was endorsed. Messrs T. Shaw, T. Parfitt M. Clark and C.. Thomas were congratulated on being appointed J’s.P The sum of £1 Is was voted to the Hospital Radio Fund. The next meeting will be held on Sep!ember 4111, 1937. A vote of thanks Io the chair concluded the meeting. A Buller Flavour:

The Wellington Ladies' Hockey team which has been chosen Io go to Invercargill for the Dominion tournament includes amongst the eleven Miss M. Clarke formerly of Millerton. Miss June Riley a Westport girl was not available for the trip but will play for Wellington against Horwhenua at Otaki on August 28th. Mrs. Black also late' of Westport is Manageress of the Wellington team.

Golf: The following are the results ot matches played under the auspices oi the Westport Golf Club during me week-end:-—

In the qualifying round (18 holes medal) of the Coronation Cup Knockcut competition, the following were' the best nett scores returned: — D. Fountaine 74/4/70, M. Levestam 77/5/72, C. Schadick 77/4/73, R. Nottle 82/9/73; the following were the best gross scores returned: C. Schadick 77, H. Lovell 81, H. Lockey 82, R. Nottle 82. A four ball bogey match, played in the afternoon, was won t>y D. Fountaine and N. Nottle, who returned a card of 8 up. The Jubilee Cup competition (knockout on handicap) was concluded during the week-end, Mr. W. A. Smith beating Mr. L. Spencer in the final. State Placement Service:

The following are the number of men found positions during the week ended 7/8/37 through the Westport office: Permanent 6, temporary 1, State department 1, subsidised workother than with State departments 1. Total 9.

Placements to date through Westport office: Permanent with private employers 4, temporary 10, total 110; State department, 27; subsidised work other than State departments 2, temporary 1. total 3; women and girls, 24; grand total 164. Personal: Mr. R. Crawford, manager of Victoria Theatre has received notice of his transfer to Ashburton to take over managership of a theatre there. Mr. Healey of Ashburton wjll succeed Mr. Crawford here. The engagement is announced of Mr. Patrick D. Twohill son of Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Twohill Wellington to Miss Marie McDonnell, daughter of the late Mrs. McDonnell and Mr. C. McDonnell, of Westport. Mr. Twohill who is on the staff of the bank of New Zealand at Westport has received notice of transfer to New Plymouth and leaves at the end of the month. The marriage will take place before that date..

Shipping: The Kaimai ’sailed yesterday for New Plymouth. The Kalingo and Kartigi load here to-morrow. The Poolta is due here to-morrow. The Wingatui is due from Wellington on Wednesday. The Kekerangu. on and

■the Kaiwarra on Friday. The Kaimai is due to return here on Friday next to part load for Miramar and completes her cargo at Greymouth,
