MISS EARHART’S SCARF

ALLEGED USE FOR EXTORTION. [Aust. & N.Z. Cable Assn.] NEW YORK, August 5. - A Federal operative arrested Wilbur Rothar, a janitor, living with his wife and eight children, on -a charge of attempted extortion from Mr. Putnam. Rothar, last month, while viewing Miss Earhart land at the local airfield, picked up the aviatrix’s scarf, which was blown off by the wind. Rothar used the scarf to convince Mr Putnam that Miss Earhart was still alive, having been rescued by an arms-running ship, from an island near New Guinea, and he demanded 2,000 dollars for her safe return.
