WESTPORT NOTES
[Our Own Correspondent] A Happy Function: WESTPORT, August 6. A very jolly party took place last evening at the Elite Tea Rooms, when, close on 80 guests assembled to celebrate the occasion of Miss Flora Adank’s attainment of her 21st birthday. Mr A. Ridsdale, who occupied the chair, proposed the main toast of the evening, and Mr R. Higman was entrusted with the toast “The Young Lady’s Parents,” (Mr and Mrs T. Adank). Other toasts punctuated with vocal items, were honoured. The evening, which proved a very happy one, was occupied with games and dancing. Mrs Curtis provided the music. Vocal items were rendered by -Miss A. Adank and Mr Higman. A parcel game was won by Mr V. Gillovic. A lucky spot and Monte Carlo were won respectively by r Miss Todd and partner, and Miss Hardie and partner. Miss Adank was the recipient of many congratulations end presents.
Buller Medical Association: For some time the Buller Medical Association has been endeavouring to have subscriptions deducted from pay envelopes at the local P.W.D. oflice, but without success. The matter was placed before Hon P. C. Webb, and the following telegram in reply, was received yesterday morning, by Mr Baker (Secretary) of -the Association: —“Re. Buller Medical Association, am arranging for Mr E. P. Meachen, M.P., who will be on the West Coast next week, to confer with all interested parties with a view to finalising an agreement. Please arrange for all necessary delegates to be available in Westport on Wednesday evening, 11th inst. Time and place will be advised by Mr Meachen on Monday. Work Interfered With:
Owing to heavy rain, the work on the Buller Gorge Railway could not be proceeded with yesterday, and employees were compelled to return to their homes. This was the second occasion this week that the men had a forced holiday for the same reason, and with transport and other expenses having to be met, pay envelpoes will not be very bulky next week. Personal: Miss L. Connelly is visiting Nelson on holiday. Mrs J. Bowden and Mrs M. Robinson, junr., left yesterday for Greymouth, to spend a short holiday. Shipping: The Kaimai and Rata arrived in port yesterday. The Wingatui and Thistleford sailed yesterday. The Canopus and Hokitika are due this week-end.
