STATE HOUSES

FAMILY NEED TO BE CONSIDERED. [Per Press Association], WELLINGTON, August 5. Sub-letting is to be discouraged on the part of the tenants of the Government houses, according to a statement by the Under-Secretary for Housing, Mr J. A. Lee, to-day. Mr Lee stated that the intention is to lei each house so as to provide for the maximum occupation of the rooms by the renter’s family. Referring to the opportunity' for an unemployed man to secure one of the State houses, Mr Lee said: “One cannot be dogmatic about things like that. A man may be on sustenance, but the income of his family, as a whole, may be £7 per week. Who gets the houses will be determined on the combined basis of the need of a family for a house, and its capacity as a whole to pay the rent. ’
