REEFTON NOTES
[Our Own Correspondent] REEFTON, August 5. Snow fell at Reefton early this morning and continued until about 10 o’clock. By that time there was nearly an inch on the ground, and then rain set in and, falling steadily, soon melted the snow. The day, however, was cold and unpleasant. There was a good attendance at the Band’s old time dance in the Band Room last evening, and dancing was kept going With great spirit until midnight. Mr. Leslie A. .Watson, received a cable this morning conveying the sad news that his mother, Mrs. Mabel Lucretia Watson, wife of Mr. A. P. Watson, had passed away in hospital in London on Wednesday night at 10.20 o'clock. The deceased, with her husband, left Reefton for the Old Country at the end of April last, intending to spend the winter in England. Soon after arrival in London, she was taken to hospital, whejo she had since been until her The late Mrs. Watson was very well known in Reefton, being of a bright, happy disposition. She was a native of Hokitika, and a daughter of the late John Orr, and was in her 56th. year. She is survived by her' husband, at present in London, and two sons, Aubrey T. (London) and Leslie A. (Crushington). She also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Mann (Melbourne) and Mrs. Ford (Johannesburg), and four brothers, Frances Orr (New Guinea), John (Wellington), Robert (Christchurch) and William (Hokitika). The bereaved family will receive the sympathy of the district in their loss. Mr. B. H. Winchester, presided at ,a meeting of the Committee of the Reefton Whippet Racing Club. Mr. J. Wylde, of Ikamatua, waited on the Club requesting that a whippet meeting be held at Totara Flat for the purpose of raising funds for the R.S.A. Queen for the Ikamatua Queen Carnival. Mr. J. Spillane moved, Mr. F. Sara seconded, that the Club communicate with Mrs. Biltcliff, requesting the issue of a permit for a benefit meeting at Totara Flat.—Carried. It was resolved that the Club pay the expenses of the delegate who attended the recent meeting at Westport. It was resolved that Mr. Batten be requested to attend the meeting of the National Council ol Whippet Racing, and that he be asked to support the remits submitted by the Greymouth-Cobden Club. A vote of thanks to the Chair closed the meeting.
