UPPER HOUSE

NEW APPOINTEES. [Per Press Association], CHRISTCHURCH, August 4. The statement on Tuesday by the Prime Minister (Mr Savage), that appointments would shortly be made to the Legislative Council has led to a great deal of speculation about likely new Councillors, but it is generally believed in Labour circles in the city that the certain appointments include Mr J. K. Archer and Mr John Rigg. Other prominent workers and supporters of the Party, including Mr W. J. Green and Mr J. S. Barnett, have been mentioned. It is generally believed in the city, that the Government has no intention of extending terms of four of the five Legislative Councillors, who vacated their office in June, through the effluxion of time. These were the Hon. D. Buddo, the Hon. J. Trevethick, the Hon. R. McCallum, and the Hon. R. Masters. The term of the Hon. M. Fagan also expired at the"same date, but his term was renewed by the Government almost immediately. It was stated at that time that the situation of the remaining four members whose terms had expired would be left over till the return of the Prime Minister from his visit to Great Britain. However, it was then stated that in Parliamentary circles, the feeling was that the office would not be renewed in the case of the four members named.
