WESTPORT NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent] Obituary: WESTPORT, August 5. The death took place last evening of Mr. George Goldie, a highly esteemed resident of the town, after a short illness at the age of 69 years. He was a native of Scotland and arrived in New Zealand 32 years ago. He worked at Griffiths’ Foundry at Birchfield and later at Riley's Foundry at Westport. His wife predeceased him some years ago and he is survived by one son, George, of Westport, and one daughter, Mrs. Eddie Holder, who only recently left for England with her husband. Personal: Mr. A. D. Strachan, on the teaching staff of the primary school at Westport, has received a similar appointment at Moonlight School, Otago, and takes up duty there on September 6th. Women’s Branch of Labour Party: At the monthly meeting of the Westport Women’s Branch of the Labour Party, the President (Mrs. M. O’Gorman), was unavoidably absent. The Vice President, Mrs. T. Hansby, took the chair. A monthly statement and cash from the weekly card parties was handed in by the social secretary, Mrs. W. Collins, and received as very satisfactory. J. he sum of £1 Is was donated to head office fund. A message of goodwill brought by Mrs. P. Fraser from the Wellington Women’s Branch to the| Westport Women’s Branch, was reciprocated, and it was resolved mat the President of the Wellington Women’s Branch (Mrs. R. Semple) be written to re information of the branch’s activities. Sympathy was expressed with Miss J. Doran, one of the active members who is at present very ill. Mrs. Ryan repoited that arrangements were in hand for the first annual ball and it was decided to hold a special meeting in connection with same next week. Mesdames Collins, Oldham and MeKinlay gave an instructive lesson on woolcraft. Afternoon tea was served and the meeting closed with a hearty vote of thanks to the chair. It was resolved that Mrs. Ryan’s action be endorsed in wiring the Prime Minister and Hon. R. Semple, that the national secretary, Mr. Wilson, be written to regarding union delegates on Holland Memorial Hall Committee. That £1 Is be donated to the Radio Fund; that Mr. Savage be. written to re visit to Westport as it was'the wish of the branch to arrange a function in his honour, and that Mrs. Hansby be thanked for the donation of clippers to the Social Committee.

Shipping: The Storm sailed last evening for Wellington. The Wingatui sailed last evening. The Kaimai, Poolta and Kaimiro are due to load here shortly.
