JOBS FOR 50,000 IN AUSTRALIA.

MELBOURNE, April 6

To a fullj’- representative meeting of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, the Postmaster-General and Minister for Development, Senator McLachlan, said to-day that the establishment of fisheries in Australia would provide an annudl harvest worth £20,000,000 and giv e employment to 50,000 persons.

Australia’s capacity to absorb a larger population depended almost entirely on the extension of secondary industries and the development of certain primary-seedndary industries, he added. Fisheries, he thought, should fi,val in importance, the agricultural and pastoral industries. The country’s fish heritage net been exploited, but he felt the future would bring stimulation of development in fishing enterprises. . Senator McLachlan said the new committee of the council had recommended the establishment of a national standard laboratory, th e initiation of aircraft and engine research in' Australia and the setting uj) of testing research and information services.
