On the first day In* pulled double for a mile, consequcntly being* left without any dasti for the final sprint home. On Saturday'he went much better, only to find Bonny Gay too good at the weights and the conditions, the winner being
Minch more at home 011o 11 the heavy track ITe Hai may do better next season; as he is staying much better. Diatomous: When raced further south. Diatomous was not any good on a wet or heavy track, but he went one of his best races for a long time on the sodden Whangarei course last Saturday. He revealed his early pace both days, ami while he was only a moderate third the first day, he wa s still in front' at the home turn on tfhe second day. Then he bored out badly and let Crooning through on’ the inside, but half-way up tlii-. running he made over to neai the rails again, thus helping to cheek Johnny Walls, who had begun to make an effort to get between the leading pair. Diat'omous was only beaten a neck by Crooning, so it looked ns if he might have won had he finished ■1 raight. Surella:
A feature of Surclla’s two runs at Vhangarei was that he fought, on more gamely than his record for courage would suggest possible. He came from he back each day, and on the second Occasion he got to within a head of ne winner Serathire. Walked In:
Gold Pocket, winner of the raee for d str ct horses on the opening day at .Whangarei, ran away in the straight, .nd his jockey, 11. Wiggins, took a look ound- half-way up the running, and he mu t have wondered where the field wits. He pulled Gold Pocket up to merely pass the- post, at a canter, a inner by i’oui lengths. The three, car.old filly Alyth almost repeated the performance on Saturday. However, he threatened to stop just inside the distance and her rider got to work with lite whip and she ran away her margin being five lengths. These w.-ns sugge ted that the opposition might not have been very good.
About Bit o’ Blue: On what was seen of Arrow Win at Nelson, she will have to strike a weak field to win a race, but some hope ean be held out for Bit O’Blue, a three-venr-old brown colt by Sky Blue Valmai, owned by Mr. E. 11. Vile, and trained at Blenheim by J. T. Leonard Theic- was little merit in Bit o’ Blue’s third to 'Ohanga and Southern Blood in the Trial Stakes on Monday, but he mproved with racing.
Impressive Effort: One of the best efforts among the hacks at Whangarei was by ’.he riiieeyear.old Tip Toes in the mile event! Ou Saturday. She was one of the leaders in the "rush out of the straight and along the back she was dropped in behind. But’ she appeared to drift a bit too quickly, with the result tl'-G m’”-ot taring the home turn she uas fairly well back, and her prospects w.ire anything but bright. She had co be good "to win fiom her position, yet she actually got to the front at the half distance, and won easing up. Tip Toes looks like staying, as she undoubtedly inherits some of the stamina displayed on the Turl by her dam, the defunct Grand National Oaks winner Danae. Tift Toes may make her next appeaiace at Pukekohe next month.
Survoy: Survey was jiroduced in splendid order at Whangarei, and he led all the way to win the Witipu Handicap o u Friday. He never looked like being (saugli’t, and when challenged, away again. Inside the d.stance Gay Broney seemed to have his measute, vet still another effort was there, and Survoy won by a head.. On the second dav Survov was chopped out at the start, and ns the pace was on good and strong in the dash to the bend he was always uj) against it, and finished out of the money, lie should make a finchu rd!er.
Dictate Should Atone: Dictate. wh o won the Ya'.dhur-t Handicaj) on the second day of th ‘ C.J.C. Easter meeting, was sorted out as a good thing for the Stewards’ Handicap, the concluding event at Wamate on Saturday, de.pite the tael that he drew what looked a hopeless positiou at the barrier. A horse that is not well placed at the start of a sprint on the Waimate course must be extra good to win, and although Dictate came into the picture at the bustness end he had no chance with the ]4aced horses. Dictate av.ll have a chance to make amends, as he is engaged at Washdyke.
Arena Collapses: The Cockpit mare Arena has not been noted for her consistency, and after fighting off Impersonator in a close finish to the Stewards’ Handicap on the first day at Nelson, sh P faded out completely over the same distance in the Flying Handicaj) on the second day after being in the lead with Marcus Cicer 0 to the home turn. She wa.s last to fm.sh.
Deceptive Looks; Top Rank, who was in invincible form tit Nelson, is a big-barrelled, uather heavy-boned chestnut son of Chief Ruler' and Comedy Queen, and on the first; day of the meeting he gave the impression of being a bit on the burly ride. Whether he was thoroughly tuned uj) or not does not mat. ter; he simply outclassed everything he met and 9.9 may not stoji h.m from making it four on end in the Blenheim Hack Handicap to-day.
Respectful: Respectful appeared to have a fiist rate chance of winning the handicap at Whangarei on Saturday, for with only three starters and no jiace on, it was only a race of two sprints—one foil the first corner and the other for the home turn. Desjiite this, Respectful’s rider might have done better had he gore to the front immediatetly after passing the five furlongs instead of waiting until it was too late, for he could not give Tooley Street a start of two or thitee lengths in the last halfmile. Then Respectful was only a length behind the winner at the post. Not GenuineRoaming is evidently not genuine. His track wotk should have won him a raee at the Manawatu meeting. Myriam: Myriam will have to K' unlueky not to experience a winning turn this season. She is very fit at present. Hunting Lore: . A two-year-old likely to develoj) m.o a useful three-year-old is the stayingbted Hunting Lore. Manawatu:
Manawatu is in excellent fettle to go on with h’.s preparation for the ’chasing season. Trotting Notes
Ups: I Chclidon was not the only shock.a.)sorber recently. Heather Glow paid
nearly a century for a place nt Thames. Great Sprinter: When will the public discover that Reporter is one of the Dominion’s gieatesf sprinters. He was allowed to ]ay another extraordinary price ‘.it [Ashburton. His sprint over the final furlong of the Flying Handicap had an Indianapolis touch about it. Blair Athol: Blair Athol looked hopelessly out ol it right .from the start of the All Age Stakes, but he ran tt great 'taee, and this good .horse is coming right back. Wafplßlii: One that caught the eye at, Ashbur. I ton wa. s Waipahi, from “Jock” Henderson’s Oamaru menage. He will lie popular at Oamaru and Forbury. Hard to Follow: . Moana Tama is the sort that keeps punters poor. In his case theie is a wide gap between promise and performance. Hor'seyower: ..I f there is. a Sapling Stakes winner in the offing it is Horsepower. The thvio. vear-old ran a meritorious fifth in a big field of older hotses at Ashburton. ■Bping out of that fine stayer, Free Advice. Horsepower .has the qualifications on breeding to become a class 1 wo-miler. Not Busliled: .Donald Dhu was not unduly bustled to score decisively at Ashburton, but Waipahi would have been troublesome had he left on terms. racing fixtures. April 24. —South Canterbury J.C. April 24, 26.—Marlborough R.C. April 29, May 1. —Oamaru J.C. [April 30, May 1. —Dannevirke R.C.. at Woodville.
