SYDNEY INCREASE. SYDNEY, April 6. A big increase in the number of cases of tuberculosis of the respiratory system reported to the Board of Health within the Metropolitan combined sanitary district for the month of March, is disclosed in the monthly report of vital statistics for the metropolis, released yesterday by the Government Statistician, Mr Waites. As against 77 cases in the same month of last- year, the number increased by 38 to 115. The deaths from the disease, numbering 39 for the month, were the same, however, as in March, 1936. The report also revealed that the infantile mortality rate for the three months, January to March, increased by 1.87 per cent, compared with the same period of last year. The number of deaths registered during the month of -March was 1054. of which 605 were mates and 49!) females.
During the month, diseases of the heart, with 256 deaths, contributed most largely to the death roll, followed by cancer 136, nephritis 66. pulmonary diseases 61 accidents, including motor, 46, developmental diseases of infants 45. tuberculosis of respiratory sytsem 39. epidemic diseases 16, senility 15, puerperal diseases 10, diarrhoea and enteritis 3.
The number of births registered was 1603. of which 842 were males anti 761 females. Marriages registered during the month numbered 1 158. The returns of the Board Of Health showed 13 eases of typhoid fever. 130 of scarlet fever ttnnd 158 of diphtheria.
