OYSTER INDUSTRY
Conservation Project MINISTER’S STATEMENT. (Per Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, March 5. Plans of the Government for the development of the oyster industry in New Zealand were discussed by the Minister of Industries and Commerce, Hon. D'. G. .Sullivan, in an interview. “The Government is keenly interested,” said Mr Sullivan,” in placing the oyster industry, and' indeed t'he fish, ing industries generally, on a better basis. Not only is this necessary from the point of view of those engaged in the industry, but also, what is more important in the interests of the consuming public,, there is also the question, of the conservation of our national supplies, and this matter wiilj require an extensive iuvestigation. “As I have announced previously,” isaid the Minister, “the question of preparing a plan fo.r tlhe reorganisation of the fishing industry ha s been referred to the Bureau of Industry, which recommended, as a preliminary step, that a small Committee be set up to gather the necessary data, especially on the problem of distribution and' marketing, so that the whole position,' and need|s of the industry and of the consumers of the products of the industry can be examined by the Bureau with a view t 0 securing re-organisation and co-or-dination. This committee has now been set up, and its inquiries will embrace the oyster industry.”
