Employees under the No. 5 Scheme In the borough of Greymouth last week comprised eleven single and 20 married men.

During the month of February, 1937, twelve building permits of a total value of £18,408 were issued by the Greymouth Borough Council.

Books issued at the Greymouth Municipal Library last month totalled 2217, whilst 35 tickets were issued, and 25 new books were placed on the shelves.

The blooms were supplied by the Superintendent of Scenic Reserves, Mr Reuben Cooper, and were grown on the Borough Reserves, making a good illustration of the excellent results achieved by .the reserves, staff. A fractured skull was sustained by Alexander Ogilvie, 52, married. oi Greymouth, a Public Works Department employee, working on the widening of the Cobden Hill road, when he was struck on the head by a piece ofl stone yesterday morning. He wa . admitted to the Grey Hospital in a serious condition, but he was reported to have shown a slight improvement last evening.

At the annual meeting of the Moana Women’s Institute, Mrs Rankin presided. The attendance was not as good as usual, nevertheless a very pleasant afternoon was spent. A sales table proved profitable to. the Institute, enabling them to start the New Year with a fair sum in hand. The following officers were elected: President, Mrs Taylor; treasurer, Airs Morel; secretary, Mrs Breitstadt.

A resident of the Karoro township wrote to the Grey County Council last evening, requesting the council to name a street in Karoro, “Gloucster Street,’’ as i't was, according to the writer, the street “nearest where the Duke of Gloucester stayed the night When in Greymouth.” The matter was referred to the engineer for a report, the chairman, .Cr. J. Ryall, stating that the council could decide upon a name, and that it should be named after one of the resident’s of Karoro for preference.

An application by West Coast Amusements, Ltd., for permission to screen pictures on Good Friday, March 26, was declined by the Greyxnouth Borough Council at its meeting last evening. Cr. R. J. Williams, moved that permission be not granted. Cr. T. B. Kent; “What is the position in other places?” The Mayor, Mr W. Meldrum: “I don’t know. Good Friday is practically a Sunday, statutorily.’’ Cr. A. H. McKane seconded the motion, which was carried unanimouslv. The Cobden-Greymouth Whippet Racing Club requested permission to race at Victoria Park on Sunday, April 4, 1937, the occasion being the Great Western Derby meeting. Cr. MeKane;' “Wonders never cease! I will move that the application be granted.” Cr. A. M. Carroll seconded the motion, which was, however, defeated, only the mover and’ seconder supporting it. Crs. G. R. Harker, J. B. Kent, R. J. Williams, and A._ 11. Paterson voted against the permit being granted.

An exceptionally good catch of g|ro,per, about fifty in number, W£rs yesterday made by the. local fishing boat Annabella, in charge of Captain Manning.

When his right hand was caught in the rollers, of the breast bench at the Turiwhate sawmill, Terence Teen, aged 20 years, single, of Turiwhatq sustained severe crushing. After receiving medical attention from Dr Greenwood, Kumara, he was able to return to his home.

A request from Mr E. J. Rose Divisional Superintendent of the Waiuta Branch of- the St John’s Ambulance Association, that an ambulance branch be formed in Greymouth, was referred to the Mayor, Mr W. Meldrum, and Mr C. E. Heaphy for consideration at last evening’s meeting of the Greymouth Borough Council.

The Housing Committee set up at the February meeting of the Grey County Council reported to last evening’s meeting of the council in favour of the council seeking a loan for a housing scheme within the county. The recommendation was adopted.

Members of the Greymouth Labour Party are reminded that the annual meeting will be held at the Lyceum Hall on Sunday evening at 8 o’clock, when the business will include consideration of the annual balance sheet, election of officers, appointment of delegate to the annual Dominion conference, and consideration of remits for a conference. A full attendance of members is requested.

The Greymouth Borough Council at its. meeting last evening decided that regarding a request from the Greymouth Aero Club that the council take steps to have the Greymouth Aerodrome brought under effective control, mainly to exclude unauthorised persons, the Town Clerk in conjunction with the Aero Club have necessary notices warning trespassers placed round the ground, and that the Town Clerk write to other various aerodrome authorities and obtain a copy of their by-laws.
