£850 FOR WEST COAST

Lord Nuffield’s Gift DONOR’S LETTER TO MAYOR. Writing to the Mayor of Greymouth, Mr W. Meldrum, Lord Nuffieid stated: “Dear Mr Mayor,—On this, my fourth visit to New Zealand, it is my desire to make some further contribution to its charitable enterprises, and ,it appears to me, after considerable thought and in consultation with Mr C. J. B. Norwood, that the manner in which I may most equitably do so is to seek the co-operation of the Mayors of the cities, towns, and district concerned. I am enclosing herewith a cheque for £B5O, which I shall be grateful if you will distribute amongst the charities which you consider to .be the most needy and deserving in your town, Westport, and Hokitika. While I am anxious that this distribution shall be made at your sole and absolute discretion, it is my wish that prior consideration may be given to such causes as crippled children, hospital and. materr nity work, and those .suffering from such afflictions as blindness, deafness and dumbness. Will you please ar» range for an acknowledgement to be sent tO' me at this address.” The letter was read at last evening’s meeting of the Greymouth Borough Council, when the Mayor moved a hearty vote of thanks to Lord Nuffield. for his generous gift, and that he be informed that the . council would be pleased to carry out his wishes regarding the disposal of the grant. . Cr. A. M. Carroll seconded the mo' tion, which was carried.
