HOKITIKA NOTES
(Our Own Correspondent). HOKITIKA, March 4. Twelve truck loads of lambs were railed; from here to-day for Canterbury. Recent floods have seriously damaged the harbour protection works on the north retaining wall. Many piles have been loosened and detached. Mr H. T. Parry returned yesterday from Wellington where he attended! a conference with the Minister of Defence, on aviation matters. Mr Parry piloted the local club’s plane to and from Wellington. The death took place at Invercargill shortly after midnight of Mrs Hughes, wife of Mr Henry Hughes, a former well-known res.dent of Hokitika. Besides her husband, she leaves a family of five., a sister (Mrs J. M. Maebeath, of Rolleston Street), and two brothers (Andrew and Thomas Wells, of Wood, stock.) At Addington stock sale, yesterday, sales of fat- lambs included; W. A. Jamieson (Koiiterangi), 75 at 24s lOd to 26s LOd; H. M, Coulson (Koiter. angi), 18 at 23s 4d to 24s Id. Visitors at Keller’s Hotel include: Mr and Mrs Denton (Sheffield, Eng land), Lt. Colonel and Mrs Wheeler (Calcutta. India), Mrs W. [P'attrick (Hornstanton, England), Mr and Mrs W. N. Ryan (Melbourne), Mr and Mrs R Flewellyn (Auckland), Mr Thomas, Mrs Curzoii (London). Mr and Mrs R. C. Clifford (Wairarapa), Mrs and: Miss R. J. Andrew (Ashbunton). A meeting of the Rimu and Woodstock Women’s Institute was held at Mrs J. Kelly’s residence on Tuesday evening. Mrs Olsen presided over a good attendance. The roll call: “A Farmyard Noise” was very amusing. The motto was “Work and be Contented.” The secretary read the annual report., showing the' Institute ‘is financial The election of officers resulted: President: Mrs J. Kelly; Vice-Presid-ent, Mrs H. Surgenor. A hearty vote of thanks was extended to Mrs Olson and Mrs T. Boyd,, retiring president and vice-president. Regret was expressed at losing Mrs Lewis, an expresident, as a member, now living m Hokitika, also Mrs J. Stoop. Two competitions for the evening were won by Mrs T. Willoughby. The article for next week month is to be an ttpron made from any kind of material. Roll Call, use of kerosene. A dainty supper was then handed round, by the hostesses Mesdambs IL.
