WAIUTA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) The many local friends of the late Mr James Douglas heard with sincere regret of his tragic death at the Blackball mine, on Monday. Deceased was well and favourably known at Waiuta, where he was for some months employed at the Blackwater Aline. The late Air Douglas, besides other activities, was a prominent, member of the local branch of the W.E.A. To his relatives is extended' the sincere sympathy of his many .Waiuta friends in the tragic bereavement which has overtaken them'. Air and. Airs Ron. Talbot (Dunedin) were among the week-end visitors as the guests of Air and Airs George Talbot, Empire Hotel. Messrs D. Costigan and ,1. Cameron are spending a few days in Greymou'th. Air J. Jackson is spending a few days in Christchurch. Miss K. Kennedy has left for Greymouth. prior to taking a position in the Nelson district. The team from the local Division of the St. John’s Ambulance Brigade, which recently visited Christchurch for the competitions, were successful in winning the Brown Cup from the Christchurch team, and also secured two seconds and a third, being narrowly defeated on each occasion. This is the first team from the "West Coast to visit Christchurch for the competitions, and a good deal of credit is due to Superintendent E, J. Rose, for the capable manner in" which the team'was trained. The members of the team were Alessrs R. Hall (1), R. "Robertson (2), D. Jobling (3), J. Keenan (4), with Superintendent E. .1. Rose, in charge. The Waiuta. schoolboy’s boxing team to the number of 26. visited Reefton on Saturday evening for the Reefton Tournament. All acquitted themselves well, and the smart manner in which they were turned out, reflected much credit on their tutors and trainers, "Messrs J. Nelson and A. Malloy. E. Nelson, Trevor Holmes and Les. Coulson were winners of medals. Captain C'oxall (Reef lon Volunteer Fire Brigade), was a visitor to the township during the week. The local branch of the Women’s Institute held a. successful social evening in the Hall on Saturday evening. A sale nf work was also held on Monday evening, and as a. result, the funds towards building a hall will he considerahlv augmented.
