HOKITIKA NOTES

(ou r Own Correspondent). HOKITIKA, October 21. Last evening Mr Johnson, W.E.A., organiser and tutor, outlined a course of sttfdy to the Hokitika branch of the Labour Party. Classes will shortly be formed in Hokitika, and Air Johnson was present, not so much to give 'tin address, as to point out the way in which such classes might be conducted, and the immensely interesting and wide field for discussion. International, national, political, and social questions all lay within scope of such classes 'and all were vital, for as Mr Johnson said, a democracy could only function wisely and well if the individuals exerted themselves to form intelligent opinions on such matters. The discussion which followed. showed there was no dearth of opinions, but the wide field 1 covered necessarily debarred any approach to finality. A’t the close- of the evening, a hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr Johnson. The many friends of Air ami Airs J. If. Sweney, of Hokitika, will regre, to hear of the death of their eleven-months-old daughter, which took place at the Westland Hospital to-day. The “Gael” sailed at one o’clock this afternoon for Bruce Bay. The railway crossing Kit Park Street has long been considered a dangeious one to traffic, and representations have been made by residents to the Member for the District, Mr J- O’Brien. In reply. Air O’Brien said he knew the crossing particularly well, having driven over it on scores of occasions, and in his opinion, it was one of the most dangerous ou the West Coast. Mr O'Brien said he would take the matter up with the Minister of Railways immediately with a. view to having either a warning bell or an overhead crossing put in there. There should certainly be no difficulty for the Dcpar.ment to do either. Upon receipt ot a reply from the Minister, he would advise them of the position. Guests at Keller’s Hotel include: Air X. T. Haddon (Wellington), ’Mr C. A. Thompson (Christchurch). Air S. D. D'llon (Christchurch), Air J. Tene.i (Christchurch), Miss Al. Cormack Miss F. Cormack (Auckland), Mr B King (Christchurch), Air S H.
