Regent Theatre

“THE DARK ANGEL” This picture is now screening at the Regent Theatre for to-day and tomorrow. The story is as follows: As far back as she can remember, Killy Vane has been in love with Alan Trent who, with his aunt and cousin, Gerald Shannon, grew up in a neighbouring

house in a lovely corner of England. Gerald has always been in love with Kitty. The "War takes both boys to the front. Home on leave Alan tells Kitty he loves her. Their estatic plans to marry the following day are shattered by sudden word cancelling all leaves. Kitty goes with Alan to a' little inn at Folkestone. They swear marriage vows and try to forget these .few hours together may be their last. Next morning Alan heads to the, trenches. Gerald overhears the vicious Lawrence Bidley. who met Alan at the inn, taunt him about his “escapade’’. Believing Alan has been untrue to Kitty, Gerald, his superior, refuses him leave to return and marry her. Gerald is wounded. Alan is believed killed. The War over, Alan is in a training school for maimed soldiers, blind and unwilling to return to be a burden to Kitty. Sir George Barton, an official, persuades him to go to her, but he loses his nerve and instead alights at a village. He he achieves success as a writer of children’s stories. One day while he and Barton are fishing, a woman member of a hunting party is thrown from her horse and stunned. She is Kitty Vane, now engaged 10 Gerald. Alan rushes away unseen, and noting his painful reactions, Barton ’phones Gerald and tells him where to find Alan. Alan plays his part so well whim Gerald and Kitty arrive that they fail to realise he is blind. His seeming coldness wounds Kitty, but she tells him she still loves him and always will. Gerald watching from a window realises and points out the truth to Kitty. In a moment sho is back in Alan’s arms,

“POPEYE” BALL. All dance patrons arc requested to note that the Paroa Tennis Club's “Popeye” Ball will lie held in the Paroa Hall on Saturday next. Valuable prizes, including double tickets to the Regent Theatre, will bo ollered for the best “Popeye” and “Olive Gyle” costumes whilst the programme will include a Monte Carlo, Lucky Spot and numerous novelties. The Marina Orchestra will supply the music. Kennedy’s ’bus will leave the Greymouth Post Office at 5.30. LABOUR BALL The Labour Ball, to be held at Schaef’s Hall on Monday next, October 26, promises to eclipse all previous functions of the kind held this year. The full Marina Orchestra of six instruments will provide the latest in modern dance music, together with a liberal assortment of delightful oldtime melodies, whilst the presence of Mr Pat Coll in charge of the floor, will be an added guarantee .of a thoroughly enjoyable night. Paper hats and novelties will contribute to the gaiety of the evening and a delicious homemade supper will be provided by a strong ladies’ committee. The ball committee are leaving no stone unturned to ensure the greatest success for the Inunction which will provide every class with a unique opportunity of celebrating the introduction of the 40-hour week in industry.
