NELSON CREEK NOTES

(Cup Own Correspondent). On Tuesday the annual meeting of the Cricket Club was held, Mr Ogilvie presiding over a fair attendance. The report and balance sheet were read and adopted, there being a small debit balance on the year’s working. It was decided to procure a new set of matting for the season. The president congratulated the Club on winning the Foster Cup. A very successful season had been enjoyed by players and supporters alike. Keen interest is again being displayed and another successful season is anticipated. The weekly euchre conducted by the Hall Committee was held last Wednesday. The prize-winners proved to be Mrs John Hynes and Mr Goodall (Blackball). The school was the scene of an enjoyable dance last Saturday for the purpose of augmenting the funds of the local Catholic Church. Visitors were present from many neighbouring parishes. The music was supplied by the Marina Orchestra, extras being played by. Miss Paul, of Ahaura. The Church funds should be greatly augmented by this very successful function.

The monthly mooting of the Women’s Institute was held in the schoolroom last Thursday, Mrs Williams presiding over a good attendance. The meeting opened with the singing of the Insli tute song. Four new members were enrolled. An invitation was received from the Brunner Institute for their birthday and was acknowledged. Mis Williams and Mrs Taylor represented Iho local Institute at the Council meal - ing at Reefton. Orders for Christmas cards from different members wentaken. The motto for the. month was: “Never trouble trouble till trouble troubles you.’’ Over the week-end the Cricket Club held its opending function, in brilliant weather, and some very bright cricket was seen.

The proposel married v. single cricket challenge did not eventuate, but teams captained by J. O’Brien and W. Vincent played an interesting one innings match, Vincent’s team winning by 111 runs to 101. Prominent scorers were Lamberton 40, Vincent 40. O’Brien 29. Taaffe 21, Walker 19, Tibbles 16 and Coles 13. Arrangements are being made for the playing of the married y. single challege match on the first available week-end.
