Further light on the Government’s intentions in the building of the Haas'. Pass and Hollyford Valley roads is given in a letter received by the fcjuuthJand League from the Minister of Public Works (Mr. R. Semple). The Minister states that the decision to link east and west, which were announced some weeks ago, was not ma de without mature consideration being gi\ en to the merits of both roads and from a, natural viewpoint. He gives Okuru as the ultimate objective of the Hollyford Valley r oute. “It is true," continues the letter,_ 'that for the present the intention is that the Hollyford Valley road will be proceeded with, only as far as Lake M’Kcrrow, but I his section will take some time ami •when that point has been reached it is quite possible that the Government mav he able to push onwards in the direction of Okuru. I cannot «f ‘his juncture give you a definite assurance that work beyond Lake M’Kcrrow will be undertaken as soon as that point is reached.” Mr. Semple’s letter continues, “but at the moment I am very hopeful that the work will be carried on continuously until the ultimate objective —Okuru —is attained."
