VENICE ROCKED
SEVERE QUAKE In Northern Italy (Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn.) ROAIE, October 18. Sixteen were killed and many injured in an earthquake in the neighbourhood of Udine. Fifteen of the dead were trapped while sleeping- in houses -which collapsed at iCanevadesacile. Another victim was at Conegliano, where the ancient castle was shaken down. Fifteen were injured in Venice where old houses fell. (Received October 19 at 8.30 p.m.) LONDON, October 19. The Rome correspondent of the “Daily Mail” says: The earthquake occurred at 4.11 a.m. It was particularly severe throughout the Venetian province. The city of Venice rocked for twelve seconds. There were wild scenes of panic, when the inhabitants of Venice, only half clad, fled from their homes. Many who were terror stricken plunged into the canals. Saint Mark’s Cathedral, the Doges’ Palace and other show places of Venice are believed to be undamaged. The shocks extended throughout the majority of the areas of Northern Italy. Many- historic buildings have been damaged. 23~KinTd A SECOND SHOCK. ROAIE, October 18. The earthquake toll is twenty-three dead. There was a second shock, lasting for four seconds, which rocked the Belluna and Udine provinces, at 10.25 p.m. No casualties arc reported.
