DENNISTON NOTES
(Ou r Own Correspondent). Air. Matt Hewitson of Denniston who has suffered a illness, is now on the road to a complete recovery and hopes to resume work in the near future. Airs F. Nelson, Denniston, is paying a visit to Reefton. Air Jock Fayen, juur. is now mine host at the Railway Hotel Waimangaroa. Mr. and Mrs. Marshall of Mokihiuui are spending a holiday with their daughter Mrs, R. Roper at Burnett’s Face.
Air Vic Stephens has accepted re-em-ployment with the Westport- Coal Company. Air. R. Kerr has accepted work with the P.W. Department in the Buller Gorge. Air AL Berry presided over ia> good attendance of members of the club and library in the secial room at the club. Air. J. B. Hudson, secretary, presented the half year financial statement. Alany questions were asked and satisfactorily answered. The report was 'adopted unanimously. The chairman gave a report of a deputation to the Westport Coal Company. The Committee’s action in thanking the company for their financial assistance was endorsed. A sincere vote of thanks to Air. L. Peacock, the auditor for services rendered was carried with acclamation. The secretary reported that with the assistance from the Westport Coal Company and the Minister of Alines (Hon. P. C. Webb) the committee had been in the position to purchase 112 new books for the library A request from the Denniston School Committee for assistance in replendishing the school library, was left in the hands of the committee. It was unanimously decided to place the Labour weekly “Standard” on the tablealso the sporting monthly “The Ring.” Air. L. Peacock in a few well chosen words gave some very good advice in regard to Club’s financial position. A general discussion followed on the improvcinent for the members’ benefit, with a view to increasing membership. The prevalence of mumps have been the cause of -the Denniston, school being closed for a fortnight. The changeable weather, with severe wintry conditions, and heavy rain with the epidemic of colds and mumps has greatly affected the attendance. The teaching staff advised the pupils not to congregate or attend the pictures. Alafshallvalc Women’s Institute held the'r first meeting, eighteen members being present. The following were elected to official positions:— President, Airs Cl Brock: A r icePresident. Airs J. Brownlie; Secretary. Mrs Harris; Treasurer, Airs. Pollock; Committee. Alesdam'es Allan, Hewitson, and Saunders.- Arrangements were made to receive Airs Kelso the Dominion Organiser, -Sever. a 1 members decided to visit Hector for the “Rally”. Airs. Allan gave a demonstration on how to cut -a “Princess Slip”, which was thoroughly appreciated. The competition was a d’oyley and some beautiful work was presented. The prize winners was Airs Harris Ist. Airs Walker 2nd, Alrslßrock 3rd. A dainty supper was served by the hostesses. The ' Denniston mine worked the full week. On Thursday, the top mines were compelled to knock off earlv due to a mechanical breakdown. The electrical storms ' caused minor damage.
