WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
MEETING AT REEFTON. The auu/uial meeting of the VestCoast Council of the Federation of Women’s Institutes opened at the Criterion Theatre, Reefton. yesterday, at. 10.30 o'clock. Approximately one hundred members attended, represent mg Institutes from Buller iu the north to Harihari in the south. .Mis McKay, Ross, the president ol the Federation, presided, and associated w'th her on the stage, wete Alesdames Peebles (Ross). Rankin (Roto mniiu). Bassett and Patterson (Uoki tika.) . . Au exhibition of work, comprising entries from Harihari, Marina, Nelson. Reefton, included fancy work, pewtei ware, basket work, raliia work aud beaten copper, the latter part eulaily being greatly admired. The ladies'were entertained at morning tea by the Reefton branch, ami the gathering was officially opened by the singing of the Institute ode. Airs Discaciati, Reefton. presiding at the piano. Mrs 'Bassett, Hokitika, read the aspirations. The minutes of the previous bi-ennial Council meeting, held at Greyniouth, were read and eonfirmed, and the annual report r ead and adopted. In the annual report, the Presiden. reported that replies had been received from' the Hon. Alinister of Education. re. a remit scut in to the last Council meeting from Reefion, requesting that the cos! of books used m the IlTglt .Schools lie inquired into. and that sewing mistresses should lie ic inslated. Both remits received favourable replies. Airs Stewart, Greyniouth reported that in the schools controlled by male teachers, sewing mistresses had been le-engaged. The President reported that the broadcast organised by the "Womens Institute, from 3ZR Greyniouth was functioning, and tvas the first oiganised by Women’s Institutes in New Zealand. A suggestion was made that a tain on'diet which was broadcast from Station 3YA, fairly regularly, by a prom nent dietician, be included in the broadcast talk, and that permission be asked to have this repeated. This was adopted as « recommendation. A discussion on the representation of the South Island on the Dominion Executive Committee took place, and it was resolved that a remit be sen l to the next meeting of the Dominion Institutes, to be held in eighteen months time, that there be representation given to the. Vest Goa. . Federation of Institutes’ Council, ami that the North and South Island Institutes should have equal representation on the Dominion Executive Committee.
